“What are you going to do this afternoon?” I ask, trying to change the subject.

“I don’t know. Whatever it is, I guess that it will have to be inside now that it’s raining.”

I nod and he takes a bite of his sandwich and chews.

“What about you?” he asks and I shrug.

“I was going to try to meditate. See if that brings me any clarity on my future.”

“I’ll join you,” he says right away and I smile because I knew that was coming.

“Have you ever meditated before?”

“Nope.”

“I have. I’m not very good at it. My mind always starts to wander when I try to do it for more than a few minutes.”

Amos finishes off his food and takes my dishes from me. I watch him carry them over to the sink.

“It’s okay. Maybe we can make a new game.”

“A new game?” I ask him and he nods, turning and leaning against the kitchen sink. “Are you giving up on the old one?”

“Not a chance,” he says immediately and I relax.

“Alright, then what kind of game?”

“How about every time that your mind wanders, I get to ask you a question. Or you get to ask me one,” he hurries to add.

I eye him, weighing my options but his game sounds like fun. Besides, what do I have to lose.

“Alright, I’m in.”

We head into the living room, sitting cross-legged on the living room floor, facing each other.

“How does this start?” he asks.

“You’re supposed to get centered. Maybe we should find some background music or something.”

He nods and I grab my phone, searching for meditation music. I hit the first option and set my phone next to my leg.

“Now we close our eyes and try to focus on our breathing.”

“Alright.”

We both stare at each other and I smile, taking a deep breath as I let my eyelids close gently. I can feel Amos’s eyes on me for a minute, but then he must close his eyes too.

I try to focus on the music, on my breathing. I clear my mind and for a few minutes, it works. Then thoughts start to slip in.

I sigh, blinking my eyes open, and Amos does the same.

“My turn to ask a question?” he asks, and I frown.

“I think we both get one. You opened your eyes too.”

“Alright, I’m going first.”

“Such a gentleman,” I tease, and he grins. “Ask away.”
