She nodded with her bottom lip pushed out. “I’ll miss you.” She threw her arms around my neck.
“Don’t be sad. You’ll see me again.”
She stuck her little finger out. “Pinky promise?”
I linked mine to hers. “Pinky promise.” I kissed her head and tore myself away from her. “I’ll catch you later, Karma.”
“I’ll walk you out,” Jaynee said, surprising me.
Out at my truck, I leaned my back against the door, crossing my arms in front of my chest. “You gonna be okay here?” I jerked my chin toward the house.
She gave me a small smile. “Yeah. We’ll be fine. I just wanted to thank you for everything you’ve done for us. You’re a pretty special man, Zander.”
My chest squeezed tightly. “You don’t have to thank me, Jay.”
“Yes, I do. I honestly don’t know what I would’ve done without you.” Her eyes glimmered, reflecting off the streetlamp.
I didn’t know what possessed me, but I took her hand and pulled her into my arms and hugged her like it was the last time I’d ever get the chance to feel her body against mine.
“I’m glad I met you and Sadie,” I told her honestly. She fit me perfectly. I fucking didn’t want to let her go.
“We feel the same way.” She pulled back and pressed her lips to my cheek, holding them in place and rubbing her nose to mine.
My heart stuttered at the tenderness she showed me. I went for it, turning my head and capturing her lips. I didn’t ravage her as I wanted to. I held back so as not to scare her or make her think I was a dog who only wanted to fuck her. I might’ve been that way with other women, but it was different with Jaynee. Yes, I wanted to fuck her—God, did I want to get between her thighs and never leave—but I wanted to worship and cherish her more.
Like honestly, who the fuck was I right now?
She kissed me back slowly, and it was everything until she reared back.
“Oh my gosh. Okay. Wow.” She fanned her face. “That wasn’t supposed to happen.”
“I’m glad it did, Jay. Now before you freak out—”
“I’m not.”
I chuckled. “Yes, you are. But don’t. I’m not pushing for anything.”
“You’re not?” Disappointment crossed her face.
I pinched her chin. “Hey, I know where you stand. This is me putting the ball in your court. If you want to take it a step further, I’m game.”
“Game?”
“Don’t overthink, Jay. I’m telling you, I’m here.” I leaned in for another kiss. “I’m here when or if you’re ready.”
She welcomed my advances, but I sensed her hesitation. I didn’t even know what in the hell I was doing. I was just going with my gut instinct.
“We’re supposed to be only friends,” she so helpfully reminded me.
“Friends can turn into more, Jay.”
“Can they?”
“Yeah, baby. They can.” Before things got out of control, I pecked her nose. “I’ll pick you up tomorrow at four.”
She screwed up her beautiful face. “What for?”
“For work, or did I turn your brain to mush with that air-stealing kiss?”
She giggled, covering her mouth. “You’re so cocky. It was an okay kiss.”
“Liar.” I slapped her ass, making her squeak.
“See you at four.” I opened the driver’s side door.
“Yes, sir.” She waved and made her way to the front door. I watched her the whole way, barely able to breathe.
One of us would end up shattered if we took our relationship to the next level. I’d bet my life it would be all three of us equally.
Fuck, why did I kiss her?
