Kam was startled by how much he liked the idea. He tucked a tendril of her hair behind her ear.

“Let’s take one step at a time, my queen. Am I allowed to have you to myself for a while?”

“Of course. I don’t mean right now. I’m, um, taking precautions.”

He nodded gravely.

“Then when the time is right, I promise you a palace full of children. But for now, I think we should discuss our honeymoon. Where do you want to go?”

She was surprised.

“Honeymoon? But I thought… surely you don’t have time to get away? You have so much work to do, and…”

“It’ll all still be here when we get back. But right now, I want to concentrate on my wife and what makes her happy.”

“Youmake me happy. And you know what?” She snuggled against him with a little sigh of contentment. “A honeymoon sounds perfect.”

Fifty One

Kam leaned back in the armchair and leafed through a sheaf of papers. He was supposed to be going over the quarterly reports for the realm but he was being distracted by Ren. She was wandering barefoot around the bedchamber clad in just a skimpy dressing gown, her hair loose around her shoulders.

She was getting ready to meet Raya for lunch. The two women had become fast friends and were setting up a charitable foundation together. It would require them to persuade the rich and wealthy to give generously – a daunting task but Kam wasn’t worried. He had a feeling the pair of them would be indomitable.

Ren rubbed cream between her hands then smoothed it onto her legs. Kam put his papers aside to watch.

“Need help with that?”

“You’re meant to be working.”

“Iamworking. I’ve just approved another six apprenticeship programs.”

She quirked an eyebrow.

“You mean you signed a few papers. That’s not exactly hard labour.”

“I still deserve a reward for my diligence and attention to detail.”

Ren padded to the armchair. She leaned down and pecked him on the cheek.

“Well done.”

He gave her an aggrieved look.

“Is that all? I need something more substantial than that.”

“You don’t have time. You have a packed schedule today. Those two weeks we took off for the honeymoon left a huge backlog.”

“And it was so worth it.” He pulled her to stand between his legs. “I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy.”

He reached under her robe and ran his hand along the back of her thigh. Her heart started to beat a little faster.

“Down, boy,” she told him mock-severely. “You have that meeting with the Witch’s Council in less than an hour. It’s been in the diary for days.”

“They’ll have to wait. I have more important things to do.”

He undid the sash on her robe. Her resolve crumbled as he parted it to gaze at her naked body. She could never resist him when he looked at her that way. When his eyes flashed green with hunger.

Running his hands over her breasts, he leaned forward and pressed his lips to the valley of her cleavage, then her waist.
