“Aelfric,” he snarled. “I’ve come for my betrothed.”

The Fae King leaned forward on his throne, fingers steepled together.

“Lord Shadeed. It is an honour. I don’t think I’ve seen you since that unfortunate incident with Crown Prince Kamran.”

Shade’s face darkened.

“You think you have got away with his murder. But I know better.”

“Have a care, jinn. You’re in my territory now. Speaking of which, is this a social call or a full-scale invasion?”

“I do not have my army here, if that is what you mean. I see no reason for senseless deaths. I just want Raya.” His gaze fastened on Raya, sitting motionless next to Aelfric. She had not said anything, and he couldn’t determine her feelings. “Raya? Are you all right?”

Raya stirred.

“I know you, don’t I? You’re Shade.”

Aelfric watched her carefully.

“Do you remember being with Shadeed, daughter? He kidnapped you. Held you at his castle.”

Shade growled.

“That is not what happened.”

Raya tilted her head to one side.

“You used me, to make my people ally to your cause.”

“Maybe in the beginning. But not now. I came here because I need you. Come home with me, Raya.”

Aelfric cackled madly, rubbing his hands together in glee.

“Oh, this is just perfect. The jinn has feelings for my daughter.”

“Father, I…” Raya shook her head, trying to clear it. “I need to think.”

“Don’t let him fool you,” Aelfric said sharply. “He’s lying to you. He has lied constantly. Ask him why he isn’t surprised that I’m your father.”

Raya realised it was true. Shade had shown no confusion when Aelfric had referred to her as his daughter.

“You told me my father was dead,” she said accusingly. “Did you know it was Aelfric?”

Shade nodded slowly.

“Magda told me. When I went looking for your mother. She said Aelah had sworn her to secrecy.”

“So it’s true.” Her lip curled in contempt. “You’ve done nothing but lie to me.”

“Not about everything.” Shade took two strides towards the throne before he was stopped by guards, all pointing their swords at his throat. “Not about my feelings. I miss you.”

Raya stared at him. Her face was cold but inside she was in turmoil.

He misses me.

The hypnotic silver tone dimmed.

“That’s enough,” snapped Aelfric. “Lord Shadeed, you must leave now. My daughter has made it clear she wants nothing to do with you.”
