“You’re lying to me,” I reply.
“What? I’m not! I promise you this is what happened.”
“Are you really going to tell me that you don’t work for this guy anymore, Nathan? Look at your place, look at your car, look where you take me for dinners! I haven’t seen you work once since I met you. Where does all this money come from if not from beating people for a mafioso!”
I spread my arms to show what’s around us. He is drowning in money, probably more money than what you get from beating people up. I wouldn’t be surprised if he does much more for him now.
“Jamie, you need to listen to me. I donotwork for him anymore. I promise you on my life.”
“Then where does all of this come from?” I hiss at him.
If yesterday someone had told me my first fight with my boyfriend would be because he’s part of the mafia, I probably would have laughed in their face. Look at me now.
“Inheritance,” he finally says deadpan.
“What?” I ask, incredulous.
“My dad died last year. I wasn’t talking to him, but I was still in his will. I received all of this when I turned twenty-one.”
My mouth goes slack at the news.
What. The. Fuck.
“I–I’m sorry about your dad.”
“I don’t care about my dad. I left for a good reason. But I care what you think of me. I care if you’re scared of me. This is all behind me. I live a good life on money I never worked for.” He shrugs. “It keeps me out of trouble.”
“Oh God, I’m dating a trust fund baby.”
He lets out a laugh and I relax. Yes, he has a dark past but if it wasn’t for him tonight, who knows what could have happened?
“Is that a problem?” he asks as he takes a few steps towards me.
He grabs my waist in his strong arms, swings me around and lifts me on the kitchen counter. I spread my legs automatically and he settles between them before giving me a passionate kiss. Our tongues intertwine and, in a split second, all my problems disappear. My only focus is Nathan. Only Nathan because only he can make me feel this way. This safe.
He pulls away but my core is burning with a need for him. It’s never burned so hard. I know my mind is fucked up, I know I’ve completely lost when I realize that the reason I feel more lust toward him is knowing that he’s got a dark side. Like Jake.
“I’m sorry I never told you about this, ‘Me. I never thought it would catch up with me so suddenly.”
“You’re fine,” I reply. “I don’t think I know anyone in this stupid town that’s never had to deal with a gang. You’re no special, really,” I wink at him.
I see him hesitate before he keeps going. “Your scar. Was it the Wolves? I assumed it was when you said it was a gang, but I never checked.”
“Yes, it was Volkov,” I reply with anger in my voice. “Not him exactly but one of his men.”
“What happened tonight? What did Dimitri say to you?”
I tense at his name and remember his words. “He–I think he came to…” my throat goes dry and the words refuse to come out. He came to finish the job.
“I won’t let it happen,” he says calmly, knowing what I was going to say. “They won’t get close to you.”
“I don’t get it. It’s been so long, why now?”
He shakes his head. “I don’t know but nothing will happen to you. I promise.”
He kisses me again and this time, there’s no extinguishing the fire in me. I take the lead to intensify the kiss and undo his pants. I slip my hand behind the elastic band of his boxers and grab his already erect dick. The sensation makes my insides clench and I breathe in his mouth as I move my hand up and down, up and down.
We still haven’t had sex but there’s nothing I want more right now than having him inside me. My core is tensing and begging for him to take me. The wetness between my legs is only missing one thing: him.
