She was alive.
I still couldn’t believe it, and she was right in front of me.
Miracles really did happen.
A knock sounded on the door. I expected it to be a nurse or another doctor, but Zig pushed the door open.
My eyes went straight to the band-aid on his chin and the bruise around his eye. “Zig,” I gasped. I jumped up from my chair and flung myself at him. “What happened?” I demanded.
He wrapped his arms around me. “Shh, darlin’,” he whispered in my ear. “Birdie told me I could come in here, but I had to promise not to wake up Kerry.”
“What happened to you?” I whispered. I pressed a finger to the band-aid on his chin.
“It’s kind of a long story, darlin’,” he drawled.
Did he think I wasn’t going to want to hear that story? He was wrong. “Who did this to you?”
“Ram.”
I glared at Zig. “I told you to stop going to that damn clubhouse. The Sons of Sin are a bunch of assholes who don’t care about you.”
“Yeah,” Zig laughed. “Ram showed me that today. He managed to land a couple of punches and threaten to kill me before Ransom put a few holes in his head.”
I clasped my hand to my mouth. “What?”
Zig tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear. “Ram’s dead, darlin’.”
“But why? Why was he trying to kill you?” I didn’t even realize Ram was a problem. Sure, Zig had told me they were a shit club, but I didn’t think they were trying to kill him.
“Remember that Malcom guy I told you about?” he asked.
“The dead guy?” Zig had given me the rundown of everything that had happened to the Kings in the past, and Malcom West had played a big part in making the Knights' lives hell for a long time.
Zig nodded. “Yeah, that would be him. He somehow hooked up with Ram and Brain before we killed him. They were both out to either kill me or frame me.”
I tipped my head to the side. “You can’t be serious.” What in the hell? How was that even possible?
“Brain tried to kill Kerry, and when he got cold feet, Ram killed him. Before Brain had died, he had planted Easy’s fingerprints in Kerry’s car. Brain was going to go to the police and take Ram down with him. Ram killed him, and Ram was then going to kill me because I was causing him problems.”
“Problems,” I spat. “If he had not killed anyone, he wouldn’t have had any problems.”
“Yeah,” Zig laughed. “Killing people does just bring problems straight to your door.”
“Oh, Zig,” I sighed. I wrapped my arms tight around his waist and let out the breath I had been holding. “You could have died.”
“Yeah, you are not wrong about that, darlin’, but I’m here. And nothing else bad should happen to the Knights or me. Malcom is dead. Ram and Brain are dead, and if someone else comes out of the woodwork looking to kill one of the Knights or me, we’re just going to get on my bike and ride the wind right out of town.”
I laughed lightly and sighed. “You sure do make life interesting,” I laughed.
He pressed a kiss to my lips and smiled. “I do, but I promise all the crazy shit is over. Kerry is alive, and I’ll grovel and plead to be a member of the Devil’s Knights again.”
“Really?” I asked. “You think they’ll take you back?” I joked. “It’s not like they’re your family or anything.”
“Smartass,” Zig teased.
I wound my arms around his neck and held him close. “I am, but I’m your smartass.”
“Damn fucking straight, Reese. I was an idiot when I first met you, but I’m proud to say I pulled my head out of my ass and am damn glad to say you’re mine.”
