“You okay?” he asked me.

I nodded my head and raised my thumb into the air. “Just a little bruised. What’s a 10-67?”

“Dead body.”

“You didn’t even check his pulse,” I laughed.

Ransom shrugged. “He’s as good as dead,” Ransom grunted.

I laid my head on the ground. “Fucker deserved to spend the rest of his life in jail, but I will gladly take him rotting in hell for the next million years.”

“A-fucking-men to that.”

“It’s done,” I sighed.

Ransom tucked his gun back in his holster and held his hand to me. “Sure fucking is.”

I grabbed his hand, and he hoisted me to my feet.

I brushed off my pants and ran my fingers through my hair.

“This is a fitting time to tell you why I was calling,” Ransome chuckled.

“Oh yeah? And what reason was that?”

Ransom clapped me on the back. “Kerry is alive.”

Chapter Twenty-Four

Reese

“She’s going to live.”

I never thought I would hear those words.

Not when it came to Kerry.

“She has a few broken bones, severely dehydrated, and quite the concussion, but she could make a full recovery.” Dr. Birdie signed out from her computer and spun toward me. “She’s mighty lucky. One more day, and she wouldn’t be here with us.”

One more day.

Holy shit.

I squeezed Kerry’s hand, and she grunted in her sleep. “Should she be sleeping right now?” I asked softly.

Dr. Birdie smiled. “It’s probably for the best. Her body needs to heal and does that best while asleep.” She glanced toward the door. “She has quite a few visitors, but I think they need to hold off for a couple of days.”

I smiled softly. “I think that is doable. None of them have ever met Kerry,” I laughed softly. “They’re all out there because I’m in here.”

“Luna and Greta told me how amazing the Knights are when one of their own is in trouble. I have to assume that also lends to when one of their owns friend is in trouble, too.” Birdie moved to the door. “I’ll give them all the updates on Kerry and let them know you’ll be out in a little bit.” Dr. Birdie slipped from the room and pulled the door shut behind her.

“Dammit, Kerry,” I whispered. “I don’t know how you are still alive but thank god you are. I was ready for you to be dead when they found you.” I pulled out my phone to call Zig, but it went straight to voicemail.

Maybe he was out front with everyone else.

Luna and I had sped to the hospital and had to wait over an hour before I could see Kerry.
