Reese tipped her head to the side. “If I were selling it at the bakery, it would probably cost about sixty dollars.”
I looked at Reese. “So that’s how much you are charging your neighbor, right? It should probably be more since she asked you so last minute.” She better be getting at least eighty dollars for that cake.
Reese laughed and shook her head. She grabbed a flat sheet of cardboard and started folding it on the pressed lines. “Um, no.”
She folded the box and then placed the cake inside.
“What do you mean no?” I asked.
“I’m not charging Daisy anything.”
I dropped my chin to my chest and closed my eyes. “You spent all night making a cake, and you’re not going to get any money for it?”
Reese shrugged. “Um, yes, you would be correct.”
“You’re insane, Reese. If I could do what you do, I would make people pay out the nose for it.”
She flipped the top over the cake and tucked the flaps in. “You’re talking like I don’t ever charge for my cakes. I can promise you I am more than getting paid for my talent.”
“Not if you keep giving cakes like that away,” I laughed.
She rolled her eyes and gathered the dishes she had been using. “I know you thought you were done with the dishes, but I have these.” She dropped them in the sink and smiled up at me. “Maybe you can have three beers?”
“Better make it a six-pack, darlin’.”
She patted me on the shoulder. “You got it. I’ll get your first one right after I run to the bathroom, okay?”
I nodded and hitched my chin to the cake. “You want me to put that in the fridge for you?”
“If you want, I can get it when I come back.” She strutted out of the kitchen, and I couldn’t help but watch her.
What in the fuck was I doing here? Why was I doing this to myself?
Yes, Reese was a beautiful woman and wasn’t at all hard to be around. But I didn’t want this.
I wasn’t looking for someone like her.
But yet here she was.
I had been doing my best to stay away from her, but now I was in her kitchen doing her dishes while we talked like we had known each other forever.
I had watched my cousins fall in love and lose themselves to their relationships. They let their women take over their lives and not be able to focus on anything else.
What was so great about that?
I tossed the dish towel on the counter and opened the fridge. I pushed a row of water bottles to the side and set the cake in the open space.
“Find room?” Reese called.
I grabbed a beer and shut the fridge. “Moved some shit, and it fit.”
Reese laughed. “And I see you found the beer.”
I popped the top and took a drink. “You said they were mine.”
“And they are. I’ll put the dishes away while you enjoy the fruit of your labor.” Reese worked on putting away the dishes I had washed, and I leaned against the counter.
“Can I ask you a question?” she asked. She reached up and placed a large glass measuring cup in the cabinet.
