Gem: That was weeks ago!
Gem: And you didn’t tell us?!
Gem: That goes against our friendship contract.
Sam: Meanwhile, I’m still here doing paperwork, and Mike sent me a selfie with our present.
Sam: Something that looks like it comes with a remote control?
Laney: I thought about getting that one for the Mitchells, but I know Gem likes to be the boss. Ain’t that right?
Gem: In and out of the bedroom. I only pretend he has some say to make sure he sticks around. You gotta trick ’em like that.
Laney: Welp. My job here is done.
Gem: Oh shit. Jason’s home.
Sam: Go put your money where your mouth is.
Bronte: So when is the big date?
Laney: She’s alive! Five hours later!
Bronte: I was busy.
Laney: Yes. I know. I thought my boy would enjoy a little pegging action.
Bronte: No comment.
Laney: HA
Laney: The date’s on Friday.
Laney: And I just realized I’m the one who is single and really does need to use my purchases. You guys all have the real things.
Bronte: I’m sure Ethan wouldn’t mind lending his services.
Laney: No. It’s pretty much a sure thing.

Dean clomped up the steps as Laney checked her cell phone, when a text from Ethan came in saying he’d be there in a minute. He had messaged earlier to tell her traffic was horrendous, so he’d be picking her up half an hour earlier than planned. That meant she had to forgo her favorite jeans, which were still in the dryer, and throw on an old pair.
She stuffed her phone, ChapStick, and wallet into her purse and crossed it over her chest before bumping into her brother in the hall. He loosened the tie around his neck. “Where’re you headed in such a rush?”
“I’m going to a concert.” She checked the time, finally noticing how late it was for Dean to be coming home from work. He looked exhausted. “Staying in tonight?”
He shook his head and turned, walking backward to his room. “I’m going out with a friend.”
She shot him a look. “Aren’t you tired of it?”
“Of what?”
“You’re doing too much. Between the firm and all these women. You’re going to wear yourself out.”
He leaned his shoulder against his doorjamb. “That’s the point.”
“Hey.” She caught his attention before he stepped into his room. “Don’t be dumb.”
