“Be careful that you don’t risk your life in pursuit of something that doesn’t exist,” Drake said.
“Apparently, my uncle wanted me to find something,” Dezi said. “And it’s possible he gave his life to pass this information on to me.”
Drake nodded. “And someone wants that information and believes it’s worth killing to get it.” He turned to Grimm. “I’d have Hank’s people on standby in case you get into trouble.”
Grimm nodded. “We’ll visit him tomorrow to get a satellite phone and discuss the possibility of having the Brotherhood Protectors as backup.”
“In the meantime, I’m going to try to get some sleep,” Dezi said. “It’s late, and tomorrow promises to be a long day since we won’t be heading to the Needle’s Eye until the afternoon. Thank you all for your concern over my well-being.”
Molly hugged her. “You know we love you and don’t want anything bad to happen to you.”
They split up, heading to their respective rooms.
Outside Dezi’s door, Grimm waited for Dezi to unlock it and insisted on checking her room before allowing her to enter.
After a quick look in the closet, bathroom and beneath the bed, he let her enter. She walked in and looked around.
“Everything where it should be?” he asked.
She nodded.
He stepped closer and touched her arm. “Are you going to be all right?”
Dezi nodded…and then shook her head.
Grimm gathered her in his arms and held her close. “It’s been a long, emotional day.”
She pressed closer; the hand resting against his chest curled into his shirt. “I must be really tired. All of a sudden, I’m feeling very sad and weepy.”
Though he wanted to continue holding her, he had to let her rest. Grimm leaned back, his arms still around her. “You need sleep.”
She looked up into his eyes. “I don’t think I can.”
“I’ll be on the other side of the wall. All you have to do is yell, and I’ll be there.”
She lifted her chin and cocked an eyebrow. “What about having me in sight at all times? How can you do that from the other side of a wall?”
Grimm’s lips quirked. “I’d rather stay with you, but that’s completely up to you. You might prefer your privacy.”
“I’d feel more comfortable knowing you’re in the same room with me, not on the other side of a wall.” She met and held his gaze. “Would you please stay with me tonight?”
Grimm’s groin tightened. It could be a very long night of fighting the urge to make love to her. “Of course.”
Dezi’s brow knitted. “You don’t have to if you don’t want to.”
He chuckled and pulled her against him. “Oh, I want to, all right. Too much. I can sleep in the chair.” He tried to step away, but her arms tightened around his waist.
“You don’t have to sleep in the chair.” Dezi tipped her chin up and stared into his eyes. “There’s plenty of room in the bed.”
He drew in a deep breath and let it go. “If I sleep in the bed, I won’t be able to keep my hands off you.”
“Then don’t.”
“Let me get this straight… Don’t sleep with you, or don’t keep my hands off you?”
Dezi raised her hands to the top button on his shirt and pushed it through the buttonhole. “Do I have to spell it out for you?”
He nodded. “Yes, you do. I’m supposed to protect you, not make love to you.”
