“To say the least.” He dipped his chin and chuckled.
Frankie rolled her eyes. “She’s not that bad.”
Easy for you to say.
“Talk to her. I doubt she’s up for holding another brother at gunpoint so soon.” I glanced over and caught Sophia staring. “I think she knows we’re talking about her.”
Frankie waved her fingers and made ghost sounds. “Better watch it or she’ll give you the evil eye.”
“Seriously?” He glanced between us. “I remember hearing something about Nonna Abruzzo being a witch.”
She didn’t miss a beat. “And I remember something about the Marchionnis selling their souls to the devil in exchange for good looks and endless money.”
I slid my arm around her. “A witch and a soulless, but rich, GQ model. I knew we were perfect for each other.”
Glancing at Sophia, Enzo pulled his collar away from his neck. “Might as well do it now while there are witnesses.”
Frankie groaned. “Just talk to her.”
“If that’s it. We have things to do.”
He shook his head. “Not so fast. I need you two to stay put.”
“Why do we have to be a part of this?” I hated to admit it, but I was enjoying seeing him squirm.
Sophia walked over, glanced between us, and pursed her lips. “What are you three plotting?”
I waited for Enzo to answer, when it became crystal clear he was leaving it up to me, I blurted out the first thing that popped into my brain. “Do you want to becapo?”
Sophia laughed. “Nope. I am done with all things mafia.”
Frankie blew out a breath. “Thank God.”
“Then you will have no problem with me removing the Abruzzos from the Cosa Nostra?” Enzo asked.
“There are some business dealings that will need to be handled. It will take some time, but no. I think that is for the best.” She turned to me. “Any chance you’ll hire me to work for your new company?”
All of that nervous energy Enzo had felt moments before shifted to me. I didn’t know how to respond. “Do you know anything about computers?”
Frankie covered her mouth, likely to hide her smile.
“Nothing.” Sophia flashed me a wicked grin that told me I was going to need human resources paperwork sooner than I imagined. “But I know quite a bit about security. Why not branch out and offer bodyguards along with the IT mumbo-jumbo?”
The mumbo-jumbo comment aside, it wasn’t a bad idea.
“You might be onto something. Write up a proposal outlining how you’d envision it working, and we’ll talk.”
Frankie said, “I’ll help. I have some ideas.”
I had the feeling they’d played me, but I didn’t care as long as they were happy and the company stayed afloat.
“You’re going to make an awesome husband one day.” Sophia pinched my cheek.
Rubbing my face, I said, “Thanks, but I’m putting a no cheek pinching clause in your contract.”
Frankie caught my eye and mouthed, “Thank you.”
I winked. Yep. I’d been played.
