Harry’s comment came back to me. We aren’t your parents. I’m not asking you to live a lie.
That’s it. I’ve officially lost my mind. There’s no way my dad and Robert Becker are romantically involved.
Dad glanced from me to Robert. “Are any of these accusations true?”
“You know how these things happen. Most of the women threatened to go to the press when Harrison ran for the State Senate. They changed their tunes when he refused to pay them off.” Robert rolled his eyes. “As for the ex-Mrs. Meriwether, you of all people know that every story has two sides.”
Bile rose in my throat.
What a complete crock of shit.
Before we got off the topic of Harrison, I decided to lay it all out there. “Dad, have you heard anything from the private investigator looking for my stalker?”
My father glanced at Robert, who shook his head.
“Nothing?” I couldn’t imagine the guy had been working on the case for a year and hadn’t turned up anything. “I believe Harry is behind it all.”
Robert scoffed. “You think Harrison Meriwether broke into your home?”
“No, but he could have paid someone to do it.”
My father’s eyes widened. “Dahlia, I’m as shocked as you are to learn about his past, but I highly doubt Harry had anything to do with it.”
I didn’t need to win the argument. I’d planted the seed. That was enough. “Regardless, you should know I’ve hired my own PI and plan to go to the police with everything if the harassment doesn’t stop.”
“You’re going to ruin this family!” Robert turned an odd shade of magenta.
“This family? Don’t you mean the campaign?” I arched an eyebrow.
He rounded on me with his hands balled at his sides.
“Enough.” My dad rubbed the center of his chest.
Ignoring Robert altogether, I knelt in front of my father and took his hand. “I apologize for losing my temper. Maybe I’m wrong about Harrison’s involvement with the stalking, but Leo is Gunnar’s father. I won’t allow anyone to take that away from him. Not even for you.”
Robert scoffed. “Waylon, you must put a stop to this. It’ll ruin everything we’ve worked for. Think about the campaign. The White House.”
My father glanced between us and sighed. “He’s right, Dahlia. I’m sorry, but you have to end things with Leo once and for all.”
“No.” I don’t know what he saw in my expression, but his shoulders sagged ever-so-slightly.
“You’re still in love with him.” He spoke as if stating a simple fact like the sky was blue, or the sun would rise.
“Of course she is.” My mother walked into the room. “I’ve been trying to tell you that for years.”
She has?
I wasn’t aware my mom had paid enough attention to notice.
Robert gave my mother a look that would have made Attila the Hun cringe.
She pretended to ignore him, but the glass in her hand trembled.
She’s afraid of him?
My father sighed. “Dahlia, is this true?”
“Yes, I’m in love with Leo.” It felt incredible to admit my feelings without preamble or guilt. However, I’d had this argument with him so many times, I knew what came next.
