I tightened my grip on the phone. “You’re telling me someone got into the building?”

“Yes.” He sighed. “I would have missed it, if the dogs hadn’t gone ape-shit.”

Another fucking coincidence involving the stalker and Harrison Meriwether. A package the day the fake news breaks about Gunnar? Bullshit.

“Like I said, Dahlia was upset and asked me to take her to the governor’s mansion. She’s been inside for a half hour.”

Memories of how she’d reacted the night someone had broken into her house flooded me. She’d damned near had a panic attack when I’d told her I’d go to her place and pick up a few things. Receiving a package at the condo must have freaked her the hell out.

I promised to keep them safe and here I am in the middle of the ocean.

“Leo? Are you there?” Stuart snapped me back to the present.

“Yeah. I’m here. Did she… Did she take anything with her? Suitcases? Bags?” I didn’t want the answer, but I needed to know if she’d left me.

“Just a purse and a bag for the little guy.” He seemed to catch on to my train of thought. “She said she was having brunch with her father, sir. She had me wait in town.”

“Thank God.” I sagged against the bar. “Do you know if she happened to be on her phone this morning?”

“Not that I’m aware of, but she did spend some time by herself in the bedroom. Like I said, she was troubled.”

I had no way of knowing if she’d seen the article, but I’d bet my right arm her father had. “Listen. There’s some bullshit in the media today. Chances are she’s going to be even more upset when you see her again.”

“I’ll stay close and help her with your…with Gunnar.”

Does everyone know he’s mine?

“Thanks.” I glanced out the window at my brothers. “Tell her I’ll be back as soon as I can. Tell her… Tell her I said everything’s going to be all right. I’m in this with her.”

He cleared his throat. “Wouldn’t it be best if you called her?”

Yes, thank you, Captain Obvious.

“She’s not answering her phone, and the satcom is hit or miss on the boat.”

“Will do. Oh, and you might want to pick up another goldfish on your way back.”

“Dare I ask what happened to the first one?”

Stuart sighed. “Gunnar decided to use it as a teddy bear.”

So much for my play-date with my brothers.
