“Yes and no.” I hadn’t had much of a chance to analyze mine and Leo’s conversation before the flashbulbs went off the night of the party. Let alone figure out how I felt about it. “I’m not sure his reasons matter. I don’t trust him not to hurt me again.”

Maggie smiled. “But he was the first person you called after the break-in.”

“The police weren’t an option, and Leo lives nearby.” I couldn’t look her in the eye while spouting off such lame excuses.

I’d called Leo because he was the only person on the planet that could make me feel safe.

Shanna walked back into the room waving a stack of papers. “Ladies, we have a problem.”

“That was quick.” Part of me was glad for the interruption, but the other part worried whatever Shanna had found was worse than baring my soul to Maggie.

“It pays to have friends with access to state and federal databases.” She handed me a police report, complete with a mug shot of the man who’d asked me to marry him. “The information was buried, but Harrison Meriwether is a serious SOB.”
