Maggie frowned. “Sense of entitlement much?”

“It got a little ugly.” I sucked in a breath and met Shanna’s gaze. “The weird thing is, he happened to be in New Orleans Saturday night. It’s probably nothing, but would you mind doing some digging?”

“I thought you’d never ask.” Shanna stood and cracked her knuckles. “Mind if I hop on Leo’s computer?”

“Go ahead. His laptop is in his office. Second door on the right.”

Shanna practically ran down the hall.

Maggie’s eyes widened. “You don’t think he has anything to do with what happened, do you?”

“No, but I don’t believe in coincidences.” I scooted closer and lowered my voice. “I’m sorry I lied to you for so long.”

“I understand why you two kept your relationship and the pregnancy a secret, but it breaks my heart to think Papa Joe may never meet Gunnar. He’s his grandson.”

My throat tightened to the point I doubted I could speak.

“He’s not doing well at all. Evelyn’s asked everyone to go to Sicily for Christmas. She thinks it’ll be his last.”

“Leo told me.”

“What’s going on between you and Leo?” She sighed. “Are you absolutely sure the two of you can’t make it work?”

“I don’t know.” Watching my son play with his cousins made my chest ache. He deserved to know both sides of his family. Leo and I didn’t need to be a couple for that to happen, but part of me wanted it. Wanted him.

“I’m sorry. I overstepped.” She gave me a half-hug. “You know I’ll have your back, no matter what you decide.”

“Thanks, Mags.”

Shanna poked her head around the corner. “You don’t happen to know Marco’s password, do you?”

“Gunnar Joseph 0411,” I said without thinking.

Maggie waited until Shanna went back down the hall before arching an eyebrow. “He uses your son’s name and your birthday? And, you know his password?”

I hitched a shoulder. “It’s been over a year. I’m sure he changed it by now.”

“I’m in!” Shanna called from the guestroom.

Maggie gave me a knowing look. “As I was saying…”

“I’m not denying we care about each other, but you of all people should know it’s not that simple. You and Shanna were there while I cried my eyes out for an entire year. A year, Maggie.” I shook my head. “And that’s not even the worst part. He was seeing Gunnar behind my back the entire time.”

She gasped. “How?”

“He convinced Christina to bring Gunnar to him in the afternoons, and neither of them thought I had a right to know.”

“Did you confront her about it?”

I shook my head. “She quit before I had the chance.”

Rocco crawled to the sofa, pulled himself up, and offered her a drool covered block. “Ball.”

“Come here, you.” Maggie scooped the child into her arms before turning back to me. “What did Leo have to say about it?”

I rolled my eyes. “He claims he was giving me space because of Harry.”

She frowned. “But you don’t believe him?”
