I ignored him and filled Jack in on the situation.

Five minutes later, Enzo and I walked outside.

He put the keys to his car in my hand and folded my fingers over them. “I don’t like you going alone. I should come with you.”

“You have to stay here. Tara will take one look at you and run.” I rose to tiptoe and kissed his neck. “Besides, I’m hardly going alone. There will be one of your men following me, and two more in or near the house. Plus, Jack will have his cop friends close enough to make an arrest if the same men who hurt him show up.”

“Shanna, you don’t need to get up close and personal with someone to be shot.”

He had a point, but it was too late to chicken out now.

Enzo pulled me into an embrace. “Be careful.”

“I will. I promise.” He’s acting like he’s never going to see me again. I realized I was taking a risk, but I’d done scarier things without backup. His concern made me more nervous than the thought of meeting up with the bad guys.

I slipped into the driver’s seat of his swanky sportster and started the car.

Enzo stood in the drive until the gate closed behind me.

My phone rang, scaring the crap out of me. I checked the screen and hit answer. “Hi Jack.”

“We have a problem.”

Already?I swallowed my nerves and forced myself to keep driving. “What’s wrong?”

“I’ve been waiting for her for five minutes. She’s not here.”

Shit. While not surprising Tara had alternative transportation, I’d hoped Enzo’s guys would arrive before she did. “Take the sign off the dash and head over there. You still need to ID the men who broke into your shop.”

“Will do, but there’s no reason for you to be at Maggie’s when things go down. I’ll bring Mr. Boogerre to you when it’s done.”

“I’m already on the road.” I hit the gas and flew down Tchoupitoulas Street. “By the way, Enzo didn’t buy the lie. The fake engagement is off.”

“I didn’t think he would. Does this mean I get my ring back?” He laughed and disconnected the call.
