Chapter 31
Trent’s brothers were like a hive of madness as they dug around the metal object. Eventually, they unearthed it to the point where he and Hunter could muscle it out of the hole and onto a rock. When they saw the actual Superman insignia on the metal treasure chest, everyone began to laugh.
“Dad.” Trent shook his head and found Liberty on the sidelines. She looked intrigued. He knelt beside the box, noting the lock, and held out a hand to Hunter. “Torch?” He’d seen Hunter pack the small torch in his side pocket.
Hunter pulled it out of his side pocket, hesitating. “Move. I want to do it.”
Trent knew that pushing back would start a huge fight. He just wanted the box opened, and Hunter was the one who had brought the torch. He stood. “Then do it.”
Everyone waited while Hunter torched the metal. Then Brooks pushed open the box.
Trent dropped to his knees in shock when he saw a ton of silver and gold keys in the box.
Marshall fell beside him. “What the heck?” He ran his hand through what seemed to be hundreds of keys.
Kensi pushed her way in, reaching down and running her hand through the keys. “Are you kidding me?”
Trey and Brooks hastened to scoop them up with their hands as well.
Trent leaned back on his haunches, marveling. “Lift it up and empty it.”
Yes, that’s what they had to do. It was like a box of cereal that you had to empty out to take the prize, and then you’d need to put the cereal back. There had to be something else.
As if they could read each other’s minds, Trey and Brooks picked up the sides of the box and moved it to a level spot, then thrust it out so the keys spilled over.
Too bad they didn’t have much time to sort things, because the sound of a helicopter rang in their ears.
Brooks cursed and pointed to the sky. “How did Banks track us?”
