Chapter Fourteen

Sitting on the hospitalgurney, Abi swung her legs back and forth. The bed wasn’t so high that she couldn’t reach the floor, but the nervous energy zinging through her wouldn’t let her sit still. Cool air circulated over her, making her shiver. The paper gown covering her underwear was next to useless as she waited for the physiotherapist Colt was so keen for her to meet.

She didn’t know why. Physiotherapy wasn’t going to extract the pieces of metal in her thigh any better than surgery, but she agreed to the meeting in the hopes that her muscles would gain some benefit.

On the chair by the door, her phone buzzed. Hopping off the bed, she crossed the room and pulled the phone from the pocket of her jeans. Seeing Ray’s name pop up on screen sent a delightful shiver down her spine.

“Good morning,” she hummed into the phone, wishing she hadn’t had to leave their breakfast.

Spending the entire weekend with him hadn’t been on the agenda, but she wouldn’t have swapped it for the world. Between hiking the trails, picnicking on mountain tops and making slow, passionate love at night, she was thoroughly sated. His all-consuming attention was addictive and his sense of humor incredibly sweet. Seeing Monday morning dawn had been bittersweet after such a wonderful weekend with him.

His deep-throated chuckle on the other end did a number on her heart. “Morning to you, too. Have you had your appointment yet?”

“She should be here any minute. Aren’t you at work?”

“Yep. Or at least, I am in body.”

Abi smiled at the thought of said body. “Is there nothing for you to do?”

He laughed, this time the sound light and free. “I wish. I have a ton of paperwork but the truth is, I can’t stop thinking about you.”

Electricity sparked in her belly. “The last few days have been amazing,” she whispered, thinking back to lazy mornings and hot nights.

He breathed heavily into the phone, a sound she’d become far too accustomed to. “Understatement of the year, babe.”

Someone knocked on the door. Abi looked up, wishing for a few more minutes with him.

“Ray, I’ve got to go.”

He cleared his throat. “Ah, me too.” She heard a man’s voice in the background. “Call me when you’re done?”

“Sure.”

The door opened and Colt appeared with a smile. Abi ended the call and nodded for him to enter.
