“You are my Old Lady’s brother, that makes you mine. Even if you aren’t in the club.” He says simply.

“Wrench you guys can’t be involved in this.” I tell him.

“We can’t be directly involved. Nothing stopping us from watching your back.” He murmurs back.

We are still talking several minutes later when I hear a voice call out, “Montgomery vs. Montgomery you’re up next.”

I look around for Taylor, but I can’t find him. Wrench and I approach the bailiff. He asks us to show identification before he allows us to enter the courtroom. He tries to stop Wrench, “Family only, this is a closed hearing.”

“Sir, he’s my brother-in-law.” I tell him before he steps back and allows Wrench to enter with me.

“Your lawyer is already inside.” he says as he directs us where to sit.

Looking around, I don’t see Erica anywhere. I just took my seat next to Taylor, when the Bailiff calls out, “All rise for the Honorable Judge Nicholas Sparks, court is now in session.”

The Judge directs us to sit before his eyes wander around the room. When he makes eye contact with Wrench, he stiffens up.

“Zachary Fields, what are you doing in my courtroom?” He demands in a booming voice.

“I’m here to support my brother.” Wrench smiles.

“Now Zack, I know you don’t have any brothers except members of that club you belong to. Explain.” His eyes narrow at him.

“I’m engaged to marry his sister, your honor.” Wrench replies.

“Very well, you may stay. Keep your mouth shut unless called on and show respect in my court.” Judge Sparks takes a drink of water before continuing.

“Where is Mrs. Montgomery?” He asks, looking up from his papers.

Taylor stands up before answering, “We aren’t aware of her location at this time.”

“She was informed of these proceedings was she not?” He asks.

“Yes your honor, multiple times.” Taylor answers.

“Mr. Montgomery, please stand up.” He directs me.

“Yes, your Honor?” I ask, waiting with my heart beating quickly.

“Your attorney, Mr. Burns has informed me of the dire situation you have found yourself in. I can’t base my decision on that situation until it is proven. However; since the former Mrs. Montgomery has decided not to appear today, I can grant you temporary emergency custody. Court dismissed.” He bangs the gavel on the bench.

We start to leave the courtroom but he calls us back after the court reporter is out the door. “This is off the record Mr. Montgomery. You bring me proof. You get that baby back and you bring me the evidence. I don’t tolerate this bullshit in my town!”

“What happened at the hearing?” Mr. Harris asks as soon as we walk in the door.

“I was granted emergency custody by default because Erica didn’t show up. The judge said to bring him proof of their wrong doing and I would get permanent custody.” I explain, taking a seat at the table.

“Good. Now we just have to figure out a way into that hotel room without anyone getting hurt. Especially your daughter.” Mr. Harris turns into Governor mode as he pulls out his phone dialing numbers.

From this side of the conversation it appears he is on the phone with the FBI who appears to be staking out the hotel as we sit here as well as the Governor's security team.

They are all discussing plans weighing the pros and cons of every scenario. Pulling out my phone, I dial Lily’s number as I walk down the hall to our room for privacy. She answers quickly.

“How was court? What did the judge say?” She asks frantically.
