Chapter 9

Baratta

I thought I did a good job wearing Fiona out, but I was wrong. She walked the floor all night long; jumping every time she received a text. Finally around 6 a.m. she got the news, Hawk Creed was born. She fell into bed exhausted.

I took care of Bleu this morning and let her sleep. But it’s almost time for the shop to open. I still have a pounding headache but my body is mostly healed, so I decided to wake her up with food.

“Wakey Wakey, eggs and bakey”

“Hmmmm, what?”

“Food babe, wake up and eat, it’s almost time for work.”

“You cook?” she looks at me with surprise in her eyes. That’s when I realize I haven’t cooked for her.

“I’ll have you know I’m a damn good cook.”

“I’m keeping you forever.”

“I thought we established that already. You said you love me. Nothing you can do would get rid of me now.”

“You love me too, you cooked for me.” She says as she takes the plate from me.

“Are you sure about that?”

“Yep, I know you aren’t 100 percent yet. Here you are taking care of me.”

“You are right, I love you.”

Fiona starts choking on the bite of eggs she just took. I pat her on the back, trying to help her clear it.

“You said you love me.”

“Yes and ...”

“It’s just I know you feel it, but I never expected to hear you say it, at least not for a while longer.”

“If you didn’t have to go to work, I would climb in that bed and show you how much I love you.”

“If I didn’t have to go to work, I would let you.”

She finishes eating, and then heads for the shower. As soon as she is up I climb into bed. Myhead hits the pillow and I groan, from the pounding that won’t let up.

“I heard that.” Fi says stepping back out of the bathroom. “Maybe I should take you to the hospital?”

“No, not happening. You are not using me as an excuse to go see the baby.”
