Chapter 6
Baratta
It’s been a long day for Fiona, I wore her out. I am laying in bed watching her sleep when my phone sends out an alert. I know that sound intimately; I was praying not to hear it for a while longer. It means I have a job to do.
As gently as possible I wake her up. “Fiona, Fi.”
“I can’t Bar, I got nothing left.”
At first I want to laugh that she thinks I am waking her up for sex but then I realize she has given me a nickname. Some of my contacts call me Ghost because of my job, but no one has ever given me a nickname before.
“My love, I have to go to work.”
She is suddenly awake. “But I thought Tony knew why you were here, why would he call you away?”
“Not Tony, my other job.”
“Huh?” she says while rubbing the sleep out of her eyes.
“It’s my government job, I am on-call. When they call I have to go. I don’t get a choice.”
“What do you do?”
“I can’t tell you, it’s classified. I’ll probably be gone for about a week.”
She is so beautiful when she is half asleep like this, I want to climb back in the bed but duty calls. Fiona grabs my pillow from where I was sleeping just a few minutes ago, wrapping her arms around it. “Be safe”
Grabbing my go bag from her closet, I stop at the door, calling back to her “Take care of my dog while I am gone.”
She jumps up in the bed, “Bleu is my dog.” I just laugh as I duck away from the pillow she has thrown at me.
“Call your brother. Tell him about the pictures, please.” I can still hear her mumbling as I get to the door.
