“Many rumors fly around.”

“Hmm. I heard he’s afraid to show his face on account of all the botched plastic surgeries,” I add.

Cheryl nods solemnly. “I’ve heard that rumor, too.”

Grace sniggers and clamps a hand over her mouth. “Uh... I’m sorry. That’s...” She clears her throat. “That’s an interesting rumor.”

I keep a straight face through the entertaining conversation with Cheryl, knowing Grace is going to drill me later.

Chapter 7

Grace

The limo is quiet. It has been since we left the gala. I think Rowan is waiting for me to fire questions at him. I have plenty, but I’m still feeling amusement over our conversation with the colorful Cheryl.

“Botched plastic surgeries?” I ask.

He snorts. “That’s one of the more interesting theories I’ve heard so far.”

My eyes bore into the side of his face. “So, are you going to tell me who the hell this Adam is? Am I dating a Rowan Cavanaugh imposter?”

Turning to me, eyes gleaming with amusement, he announces, “I’m RowanAdamCavanaugh-Lockwood. I simply use my names to suit whatever role I’m in.”

“Christ,” I breathe. “You hide who you are by... just beingyou?”

“Precisely. And nobody has caught on yet or asked too many questions. As long as Rowan Lockwood keeps writing those hefty checks, nobody really thinks twice.”

“It helps that you’re so low-key. You don’t give anyone reasons to ask questions.”

“Well, my coworkers used to ask questions. I mean, driving around in Ferraris and living in my zip code doesn’t reflect a firefighter’s salary.”

That was exactly my thought when I first got a glimpse of his lifestyle. “How did you divert their curiosity?”

“While I was reluctant to take anything from a grandfather who ignored me my entire life, I have to be honest about enjoying certain perks.”

“I get that.”
