“I wouldn’t miss tonight for the world. I’ve been waiting seven years, three months, and fourteen days to find you, and I don’t plan on letting you out of my sight for the next seventy years.” His words cause my heart to race.

When he leans over to cover my lips with his, I turn off all my worries and fall into his kiss. Adam pulls back and lays his forehead against mine. “God, I needed that.” He smiles down at me. “What is that wonderful smell?”

“I wish I could take credit for it, but I have to tell you the truth. I grabbed dinner from The Rodeo Market,” I admit. “You wouldn’t want to eat anything I actually prepared myself.”

“Then why did you offer to cook?” Confusion fills his emerald green eyes.

“I wanted to do something nice to repay you for helping me and Auntie O out.” Slinky and Yo-Yo come running into the room and head straight for Adam’s feet.

“You can repay me by spending time with me. I want the chance to get to know you. And collect my debt.” He wiggles his eyebrows before bending down to pet the two little dogs. “And who are these little guys?” I guess the bright blue bowties on their collars give away their genders.

I point down at the taller, thinner of the two. “This is Yo-Yo.” Then to the shorter, chubbier Dachshund. “And this is Slinky.”

“Nice to meet you, Slinky and Yo-Yo.” My heart melts watching the massive man on bended knee petting the small dogs.

“Would you like a drink while I set the table?” My favorite foster mother always loved to socialize. Right now, I appreciate her drilling social niceties into my brain.

“Why don’t I help you get dinner on?” Adam offers, and I lead him into the kitchen. We manage small chitchat while I plate our dinner. “Then we can get to know each other.”

By the time we finish eating, I’m a gooey mess, wanting to beg the hot lawyer to throw me onto the table and eat me for dinner.

“Anything else you want to know?” he asks, and I blink several times, trying to catch up with the conversation.

“I, uh,” I fumble. “I didn’t realize there would be a quiz at the end of the meal,” I joke, trying to buy time.

“I just want to make sure I’m approaching this the right way.” He reaches for my hand. “I don’t want to take the chance of losing you a second time.”

“I won’t make that mistake twice.” I sigh. “I’ve lived with regret for the last seven years. I don’t want to ever go through that again.” Pushing back from the table, I reach for his plate. “Why don’t you go relax on the sofa with Slinky and Yo-Yo while I load the dishwasher? Then we can watch a movie.”

“I have a better idea. Why don’t I help you clean the kitchen, then we can go snuggle on the sofa together?”

“I like your plan better,” I tell Adam as he follows me into the kitchen.

Sitting next to Adam on the sofa, I debate my next move. Who cares if I’m a twenty-five-year-old virgin? It’s time to throw caution to the wind and go after what I want.

I reach over and run my hand from his knee to the inside of his thigh. “Are you going to keep your promise and spank me?” Oh my God. Did those words just come from my mouth? I swear the organ has been taking lessons from Auntie O.

Adam turns to me and blinks several times. “Right now?” I think I managed to shock the lawyer.

“Why not?” My mouth takes control of the situation while my mind attempts to keep up. “We both regret missing out on the last seven years. Why wait any longer?”

“Why indeed?” Adam rubs his bottom lip. “I want to make something very clear to you before we go any further.” Uh oh. I knew it was too good to be true. “If you ever try to disappear again, I’ll hunt your gorgeous ass down and tie you to my bed until you beg for forgiveness.”

“Okay,” I squeak. “I can live with those terms.” Then I decide to lay my cards on the table too. “Just so you know, I haven’t ever done this before.”

“Good.” He stands and reaches for my hand. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my business—it’s hard to hide a murder, and I’d have to kill any man who dared to touch you.”

“Oh.” I’m glad we got all that straight. “Just let me give the doggie duo some treats to keep them busy,” I tell him.

“Definitely don’t want them to interrupt us,” Adam agrees.

CHAPTERSIX

ADAM

Finally. The waiting to make my baby doll mine is almost over. Knowing I’m the only man who will ever touch her seems to soothe something in my soul. The seven years of hell were hard, but I’d do it all over again to have her.

I cover her soft lips with mine before sliding my tongue into her sweet mouth. Her taste flows through my soul, soothing the pain of missing her all these years. I hope I’m not making a mistake, moving this fast with her, but there’s no way I can turn down the opportunity to finally make Cora mine. I wouldn’t survive losing her again. I want to take things slow and enjoy our first night together, but my dumbass cock isn’t listening to reason. I’m having a hard time keeping the fucker under control.
