Page 46 of Fear is the Key

“Come here,” Luca patted the spot between him and Gavin.

Since no one argued, I carefully weaved my way to where he was sitting with his back against one of the couches. I slid under the blankets, and Noah turned off the lights as the movie began.

Gavin was watching like he’d never seen the film before, which I knew was so far from the truth. I didn’t want to distract him, so I shifted closer to Luca and rested my head on his stomach. His fingers played in my hair, and I quickly relaxed, barely paying attention to what was happening on the screen.

Even though tonight had a few unfortunate moments, it was what we needed. A chance to reconnect and ignore our daily responsibilities. What Daniel told me kept creeping into the fringes of my thoughts, and I wanted to push it away and think about it tomorrow . . . or never. Still, it weighed on me.

How involved was she? What did they know for sure? I assumed Daniel passed along all the information he’d been given, but what if there was more? The one thing I knew for certain about the Society was that they liked to keep secrets. So what if details of Juliet’s past and who she really was were saved somewhere? What if there were answers for me waiting to be found?

I tilted my head up to meet Luca’s eyes. “Hey.”

He heard my whisper and smiled. “Yeah?”

“Where’s the Society’s headquarters?” Was there even one or was it spread out among several offices?

“Downtown,” he whispered. “Why?”

I checked to make sure the guys were still focused on the movie before answering. “I want to know what else they know about Juliet.”

None of them seemed surprised to find out that she had affiliations with the AS, but they didn’t ask any follow-up questions. Did they just accept that tiny bit of information and move on?

“I thought Daniel told you.” His brows were pulled together.

I nodded. “But what if there’s more that they aren’t telling him.”

He didn’t answer immediately. “There might be.”

I felt a jolt of validation, so I wasn’t crazy for thinking they kept things from us.

“I need to know.”

He nodded a few times but didn’t speak.

“I need to get in.”

He sighed, and I twisted just enough to rest my chin on his abs. “We can’t just walk in and ask to meet with the recon team. If there’s information they don’t want Daniel, or us, to know, then it’s going to be hard to find.”

“Why would they keep it from us?” It was a question I constantly asked myself when it came to the Society. Part of me accepted that I didn’t know enough about the group to know why they did anything. The guys seemed to accept or trust how things operated, but I couldn’t do that. Not this time. Not when it was my family on the line.

“I’m not sure. We don’t always get all the pieces even if we want them.”

I frowned. “This is my dad, Luca. I need to know.”

He nodded and glanced at Gavin. “We might need more help.”

My eyes widened. “You think he’ll help us?”

He cocked his head, “You seriously think he wouldn’t do everything in his power to help you?”

Okay, that sounded bad, but I just had a hard time imagining Gavin going behind his parent’s back. It was one thing to sneak around school, but the Society’s headquarters? That could mean serious trouble, not just detention.

“We’ll need his ability to get in and out undetected,” Luca continued. “Let me talk to him, feel him out before we tell him what we’re trying to do.”

“Okay.” I had to trust Luca knew Gavin better than I did in this situation.

“We’ll get the answers, Ave. I promise.”

I nodded and cuddled into him. I just hoped I didn’t regret what we found.
