Page 15 of The Weakest Wolf

After she’s refilled my mug, she glides right back to Leo and leans down to murmur into his ear. Whatever she says is too low for me to hear, but it excites him enough to pull his eyes from her chest. I glimpse a bare hint of the silver chain she was so coy about as she straightens.

Must be him. He has the greasy smirk of a guy who thinks pretty jewelry is the best way into a woman’s bed.

Leo pushes his chair back and stands. “I’ll be right back, alpha.”

I don’t say a word.

“If that’s okay with you?” he adds.

My gaze shifts from him to Sierra, who stands with her gaze lowered, and then back to Leo. “Don’t take long. I have an announcement to make.”

I watch her for a reaction out of the corner of my eye, but all she does is turn to her right. “Leo?”

He takes her hand and leads her from the room.

When the door closes behind them, I’m lifting my mug to my lips when Bowen clears his throat. “I was hoping you’d had more time to think about the new beta.”

I visualize gutting him. In graphic detail. And then I smile. “I’ve chosen someone.” Maybe a little of what I’m thinking reflects in my eyes because he sits back in his seat.

Proving he’s the persistent sort, he nods. “I’m guessing that’s the reason for the announcement? If you let me know who, I can tell you if they can handle the pressure of the position. Not everyone here can.”

Before I can respond, Leo’s murmur drifts from the closed door.

“Hmm, I think I’d prefer a bed. How else will I tie you down?”

My wolf howls in fury.

I’m snarling at him to shut the fuck up when Sierra’s whisper reaches my ears. “Next time, Leo.” She giggles. “Not here, stop it.”

My hand grips the mug so tight that it’s a miracle I don’t reduce the white ceramic to a pile of broken shards.

Clearly, the way into Sierra Stone’s bed is through a cheap fucking necklace.

“Are you okay, alpha? You seem distracted.” Bowen’s voice draws my gaze away from the dining-room door, and back to the table. The men have paused their breakfast to study me with varying degrees of unease.

My wolf is so close to the surface that their self-survival instincts must be kicking in. I have vague memories of feeling that way when someone would set my dad off and he was doing his best to hide it. But boy could I feel it.

I force a smile as I rip my mind away from the thought of Sierra tied to Leo’s bed like a fucking offering.

“I was thinking about a pack run tomorrow night,” I say instead. “I think it’s time I met the rest of the pack.”

Bowen’s eyes sharpen, and if I’m not mistaken, turn a little predatory. None of what I’ve seen about him makes me want to trust him, and now even less. I wouldn’t be surprised if he used this pack run as an opportunity to get me out of the way.

Betas are second in command. They don’t lead the pack, but my instincts tell me that this one wants to.Badly.

“That sounds like an excellent idea. I’ll ensure everyone attends, if you’d like?” his tone is so ingratiating that I want to grind my boot into his face.

Instead, I smile. “Excellent.”

He angles his head. “Have you considered a Luna? The women are beautiful. Tera, for one.”

One of the men—whatever his name was—stops eating. Bowen introduced the others, but since I have no interest in sticking around, their names drifted in through one ear and right out the other.

The door opens, and Leo slips in, a smug smile on his lips. Behind him, Sierra follows with her head lowered and her shirt untucked from her shorts.

Was he going to fuck her in the hallway?

I force my gaze away. “I’m not looking for a Luna.” I don’t even want the one Dom will pick out, but he wouldn’t be pushing as hard as he is if it wasn’t necessary.
