“Jason!”

The doctor and I rushed forward at the same time. I gripped Jason’s hand, pulling it to my chest, as the doctor worked. Jason remained stoic, a tightening around his eyes the only indication that he was in pain. I watched as the doctor cleaned his leg and gasped when I saw Jason’s bone. I blinked away my tears, hating that Jason was in immense pain because of me. I squeezed his hand and cleared my throat, watching as Dr. Laurence packed and stitched up Jason’s leg. When it was done, Dr. Laurence stepped back and cleared his throat. He looked uncomfortable about what he had to say but managed to get it out nonetheless.

“Your injuries were quite severe, but I’ve managed to get everything back in order. You should be back on your feet tomorrow, good as new. Of course, you’ll need to stay overnight for observation. It’s not likely you’ll develop an infection, but there is a possibility.”

“Understood.”

I took a deep breath, my wolf getting pissed off she had to leave her mate already. With a frown, I let go of Jason’s hand.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?”

I froze, turning back to Jason. “Um…leaving so you can get some rest?”

Jason snorted. “How much rest do you think my wolf is going to let me have when his fucking mate is gone and he doesn’t know if she’s safe? Didn’t you just see him express his opinion on you leaving?”

“Callum is gone, Jason,” I said, patting his hand. “There’s no need to worry about my safety.”

This time, it was Dean who snorted.

I glanced at him, frowning. He shrugged, seeming unbothered by my reaction.

“Lily, my darling mate, you are forever safe from Callum, but he is not the only fucking monster around here. I can’t make sure you’re safe if you aren’t with me.”

I rolled my eyes. “Jason, you can’t keep me with you at all times. I’m going to need to leave your side at some point. Your wolf is going to need to learn how to chill, because I’m not going to be put on a leash and chained to your side. You’re not Callum.”

Jason narrowed his eyes. “Of course, I’m not.”

“Good. Now, I’m going to head back to our room so I can get washed up. It’s been a long day. I’ll be back after my shower. I’ll stay the night with you here, but I smell horrible and need to get cleaned up. Okay?”

Jason took a deep breath, his shoulders lowering as he relaxed against the bed. “Yes. I’m sorry. I’m being a bit possessive, aren’t I?”

I smiled. “A bit, but it’s okay. I’m more than happy to call you on your shit.” Jason chuckled. I kissed him and walked out of the room, heading back to Jason’s room. As I made it into the main hallway, people were streaming around, looking frantic. The royal guards were roaming the halls and the slaves were trying to get everything picked back up.

“Lily!”

I turned around, my face breaking into a smile when I saw my best friend, Amara, rushing toward me. I wrapped my arms around her, hugging her tightly. Tears streamed down my face and onto her shoulder. I was so relieved she was okay. I knew Dean had taken her, the Queen, and Laura to the bunkers, but anything could have happened. I don't know what I would have done if she'd been hurt. I couldn't imagine life without my best friend. She pulled away first and I wiped my face off, smiling at her.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. Are you okay?”

“I’m good. We just got Jason settled into the infirmary and I was heading back to his room to get cleaned up, then I’ll head back to stay with him,” I replied.

Amara sighed, lowering her head, while gripping my arms tightly. She straightened up and gave me an exhausted smile.

“Come with me. You can get cleaned up with me and meet up with Dean.”

“Why would I meet up with Dean?” Amara responded, avoiding my gaze.

“Please,” I rolled my eyes. “I could see the googly eyes you two were sending each other. It wasn’t hard to miss, even with everything else going on.”

“I was not sending him googly eyes!”

I gave Amara a pointed look. Her face heated and she pressed her lips together, shuffling her feet. I squeezed her elbow and linked her hand through my arm. I pulled her with me down the hall.
