“He’s good. He and Blake are both at LAU now.”
“I saw.”
“When?”
“At the Razors’ game. I ran into her. How is it having her around again?”
“It’s, uh…” I take off my hat and rub my thumb against the brim, avoiding Mack’s gaze from the opposite side of the couch. “It’s interesting.”
His face sparks with understanding. “Ah, so that’s what it was about.”
“Huh?”
“You still have a thing for her?”
“Who said I had a thing for her?”
“Come on, man. You can admit it now. We’ve all known you’ve liked her for years.”
“Doesn’t matter.” I clear my throat and sit up a little straighter, setting my feet back on the ground while refusing to acknowledge it’s so I can escape faster if need be. “I’ve already pissed her off beyond repair.”
The bastard doesn’t even bother to hide his amusement as he stretches out his legs and folds his arms. “What’d you do?”
“Slept with her.”
He laughs a little harder. “No shit? Does Colt know?”
“Yeah,” I mumble as my phone lights up on the coffee table. I reach for it, anxious to see if the notification is from Blake, but it’s Missy, one of the newer puck bunnies. Shit. Someone must’ve given her my number. It was probably Burrows. Or maybe Logan.
Assholes.
“Is Colt pissed?” Mack asks, bringing me back to the present.
“He was.” I turn off my cell and set it back on the table. “Now, he just wants me to fix things.”
“So, he’s cool with it?” he prods. “You and Blake?”
“We aren’t together.”
He pulls back, even more shocked. “Why?”
“Because we aren’t.”
“That isn’t an answer. Who’s holding it up? You or her?”
“No one,” I lie.
He laughs a little harder. “Okay, let me ask you this. Do you want to be together?”
I shift on the cushion, feeling more uncomfortable on the new leather couch than I should be. Then again, I’m afraid it might not be the furniture leaving me itchy. “Dating isn’t really my thing.”
“Why not?”
“I dunno.”
“You’ve never had a girlfriend,” he points out, though I’m not sure who he’s trying to remind.
“And you’ve only had one.” I stare back at him, not giving a shit I’m about to hit below the belt as my jaw tightens. “Look how that turned out.”
