“She’s not wrong.”
“No, she isn’t. She said you told her to meet with Trulo. I’ll stay on that.”
“Please do. And I’ll talk to her as soon as I can.”
“That’d help. Best is recommending Jeannie for a commendation.”
“She certainly deserves that and much more for this bust. Back to the case… What about the guy at Olsen’s school who was hassling her?”
“He has an alibi for the entire day.”
“I didn’t like him for it anyway. Anything else?”
“Not that I can think of. The snow slowed us down today, but we’ll be back at it in the morning.”
“I want to be kept in every loop. I’ll be working from home as soon as I can.”
“Got it. Let us know when we can visit.”
“Probably tomorrow.”
“Will do. Hope you feel better soon.”
“I feel fine,” Sam said.
“Because you’re still numbed up,” Nick said.
“They gave me the good drugs.”
“Be careful what you take,” Gonzo said, speaking from experience.
“I hear you. Send an update to the squad, will you?”
“Yep. Talk to you tomorrow.”
“Yes, you will.”
She slapped her phone closed. “Did you update the kids and my family?”
“All set. The hospital is being overrun by flowers for you.”
“Seriously? People are sending me flowers?”
“Hundreds of arrangements arrived after we posted the news. I told them to bring us the cards so we can acknowledge the gifts as well as a few of the arrangements to brighten up your room and then distribute the rest to other patients.”
“Wow. That’s really nice.”
“My first lady is beloved.”
“No, our president is beloved, and his wife benefits by association.”
“Don’t sell yourself short, sweetheart. People admire you for you. Nothing to do with me.”
“Whatever you say, Mr. President. Do I have to write thank-you notes?”
Smiling, he curled his hand around hers. “We have people who can help us with that.”
“Thank God.”
