“You like this one.”

“I’m sick of working nights, though.”

“Let’s not do anything hasty. We’ll figure it out.”

“How soon will Jaycee make bail?”

“Probably by the end of the day.”

“And then what?”

“I hate to say it, but we need to be on our guard—all the time. She’s proven how unstable she is. I don’t want to scare you, but she blames you for our breakup even though you had nothing to do with it.”

“Don’t worry about me. If she’s stupid enough to come for me, I’ll be ready for her.”

“That scares the hell out of me, Gigi. You can’t let anything happen to you right when we’ve finally got everything we’ve ever wanted.”

“Nothing will happen to me. I wouldn’t miss this with you for anything.”

Cameron blew out a deep breath as the sleepless night started to catch up to him. He ran his hand over the stubble on his jaw. “I’ll call you later?”

“Please do and try not to be upset about Jaycee. This has nothing to do with us.”

“Keep telling me that, okay?”

“Anytime you need to hear it. Love you.”

“Yeah,” he said, suddenly emotional at hearing those words again. “You, too.”

As he ended the call, Sam came into the pit and made her way over to him. “I heard they got her.”

“They did.”

“And she’s making a stink.”

“Not surprised. What I want to know is how long will it be before she makes bail, and how am I going to do anything but worry about Gigi? Jaycee’s convinced she’s been wronged and is blaming everyone but herself.” He looked up at Sam. “After what Gigi went through with her ex, this is the last thing she needs to deal with. How do I make it stop?”

“I wish I had an easy answer, but I’m afraid you have to ride it out until she gets the message that it’s over with you.”

“I don’t know what I’ll do if she goes after Gigi.”

“Maybe you need to talk to Jaycee again when they get back. Look her in the eye and tell her again that it’s over and nothing will change that, especially slashing your tires or throwing a brick through your window.”

“I suppose it can’t make anything worse to try that again.” Although the thought of having to see her after what she’d done made him sick.

“I’m sorry you’re going through this.”

Cameron sat up a little straighter, determined to shake off the drama. “I’m sorry to bring this crap to work with me.”

“Where else would you bring it?”

“I heard you got the green light on FDS. I can’t wait to see what that does for us.”

“I just hope it does something.”

“Yeah, me, too.”

When Freddie and Jeannie returned with Jaycee in custody half an hour later, Sam heard her before she saw her.
