“Amazed.”

“Yeah?”

She looked up at him and nodded. “That I might’ve missed this…” Her eyes filled. “I would’ve hated to miss this.”

Cameron rested his forehead on hers. “Me, too.” As he shifted his weight to press into her again, the living room window shattered, spraying shards of glass all over them. A brick landed a foot from them. “What the fuck?” He withdrew from Gigi and got up, glass falling from his back as he made his way to the broken window.

“Cam! Your feet!”

Gigi reached for her phone on the coffee table and called 911, while Jeffrey barked frantically upstairs. “This is Detective Dominguez. I’m with Detective Green, and someone just threw a brick through his window. Can you send Patrol, please?” she asked, giving the address.

“They’re on the way, Detective. Do you need EMS?”

“No, thank you.”

Cameron carefully made his way back to her, his outraged expression one she’d never seen before as he handed her sweater to her. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.” Gigi put on the sweater, because it was quickly getting cold in there, and reached for her jeans.

“Wait. Don’t move.” He pulled a huge shard of glass from her hair and put it on the coffee table. “I’m going to fucking nail her to the wall for this.”

“I’ll help you.”

Sam woke to a text from Detective Green letting her know what’d happened overnight at his home. I’m a hundred percent sure it’s Jaycee. She was waiting for us when we got home last night, told me she was pregnant, and it was mine. I told her I didn’t believe her and said to get lost. The brick landed a foot from where Gigi and I were, glass all over us. No more “favors” for her. Patrol is looking for her. No sign of her at her place or her parents’ house.

Agree on no more favors, Sam said. I’ll be in shortly and will do whatever I can to help.

“What’s going on?” Nick asked.

“Cameron Green’s ex threw a brick through his window last night, just missing him and Gigi.”

“And he knows his ex did it?”

“They’d had an encounter with her, even though both detectives were under a protective order that was supposed to keep her away from them. She’s a psycho. She’s already slashed his tires and spent a night in lockup. I had a talk with her and thought we’d reached an understanding. Apparently, that’s not the case.” She leaned over to kiss him. “Morning.”

“Morning, and welcome to another day in paradise.”

“Yep. It never ends in our version of paradise.”

“Do you honestly never think about the day when none of this will be our problem?”

“I can’t envision that, no matter how hard I try. What will we do with ourselves?”

His hand landed on her abdomen under her shirt. “I can think of a few things.”

“We can only do so much of that. What do we do with the other twelve hours we’re awake?”

“I’m sure we’ll find something interesting.”

“More interesting than what we’re doing now? I doubt that.”

“So, what you’re saying is that these are the best years of our lives, and everything else will pale in comparison?” Nick asked.

“Well, I hope not, but that’s probably true. Adrenaline junkies like us don’t just come off it without some withdrawal issues.”

“I’m not an adrenaline junkie. You are.”

“Yes, I am, and I can’t imagine giving that up, as frustrating as it can be at times like this. And with that, I must get going. Today’s the day we’re making our FDS case to the mayor, and I need to go over everything again beforehand.”
