I blinked multiple times. I could feel my heart racing. I was debating on whether I should ask this directly from him. Will he give me an honest answer considering that my previous pack pointed them out as the culprit of my father’s death? Will he be honest with me, though?

I stood there for a few seconds, just looking at him… pondering how I should respond.

Should I just ask him now?

But then, a part of me still didn’t want to rush things. My mind was haywire. I couldn’t think straight!

“What is it, Celine?”

Chapter Twenty-Five

I couldn’t get my mind off what happened that morning. As much as I wanted to distract myself through training, the information I got just won’t get out of my head.

“Are you okay? You seemed off today,” Leila said when she went up to me to check my training. Even though I was part of the warriors already, she still kept her eyes on me, and I was thankful.

“Yeah, I’m just tired, I guess,” I said as an excuse. She raised a brow at me.

“Huh, you barely trained,” she commented. I bit my lip and looked at the warriors on the field. Some of them were out because Lucas sent them to the center of the town. The Alpha and the high-ranking officials weren’t in the pack either. I sighed and crossed my arms.

“Leila, I have a question,” I said. I felt her eyes on me.

“What?”

I bit my lip for a second before looking at Leila. I didn’t know how to start this or if it was right to ask her about this. In the end, I let out a sigh.

“I want to ask something about that battle between Crest Moon and Blood Moon before?” I was holding onto my breath as I asked that.

Leila’s eyes bore into me. She remained quiet for a few seconds before she finally spoke. “What battle?”

I felt my heart rapidly beating as I stared at her, trying to phrase my follow-up question.

“The one where Blood Moon ambushed Crest Moon that led into an actual battle… where the second-in-command of Crest Moon died,” I swallowed the lump in my throat. I blinked back the tears that were threatening to escape my eyes.

“I have no idea about what you’re talking about. You know I’m not a pack warrior, right?” That was her response. I quickly creased my forehead and turned to her.

“But I’m sure you know that, right? It’s not a secret to everyone here, right? I mean, every battle the pack faces?” I said hesitatingly. Unless their higher ranks were keeping secrets, too, but then why do I doubt that? I mean, with all my experience with them here, it’s really unlikely that Lucas would hide things like that from his pack. They weren’t like Crest Moon. They were very inclusive of everybody, so it’s a bit odd that Leila didn’t know about that.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Celine. I did hear about some battle with Crest Moon, but I never heard our Alpha talking that we were able to kill a high-ranking official. So, I really have no idea what you’re talking about,” she looked at me with a bored before walking away.

I was left there dumbfounded and wasn’t able to move. Fuck. Did I hear that right? What does that mean, then? Damn. Now, this is getting more confusing! What the hell?

“Celine, let’s go!” I was just pulled back to reality when I heard Leila calling. I drew a deep breath before following her into the field. She just left me there, though, and went back to her chores while I busied myself training with the other pack warriors.

My mind couldn’t let go of what Leila said to me earlier. While I was there and doing our combat routine, I was still thinking of what she said. I don’t know. It just didn’t make sense to me anymore. Damn. Why do I feel like there is something odd here? I thought I’d be able to gain useful information about my father’s death, but I was wrong because it only made me more confused.

“Shit!” I cursed when I was almost hit on the face. Damn!

I immediately pulled away from my sparring partner. She just looked at me from head to toe.

“You’re absentminded,” she commented.

I bit my lip and heaved a sigh. “Sorry, I was just out of my head earlier,” I said and stretched my arms. I conditioned myself again. “I’m ready,” I said. She just shook her head but got ready to fight me again anyway.

We started to do the combat again along with others. This time, I tried to focus on myself even though what Leila said was still encrypted in my mind. We were in the middle of sparring when we heard the horn outside. That was followed by five-pack warriors rushing inside.

“We’re under attack!” they shouted. We were all alerted to that. Like lightning, all the werewolves went to their station while the pack warriors, including me, immediately ran to the frontline.

“Rogues are coming!” one warrior shouted.
