Ashton and Duncan owed her nothing.

But did they love her? And was possessing her the same as loving her? Were they attracted to the omega in her or the woman in her?

“If you continue with whatever that line of thinking you’re thinking is, you’re going to ruin your makeup and that is one thing I won’t allow, little mistress,” Amanda said beside her. “Now, chin up and smile. You are the Maximillian omega. There is no greater honor than that title. Come along now, your alphas are waiting.”

Her legs shaking uncontrollably, Farren allowed herself to be steered down the staircase. She had to concentrate extra hard not to go tumbling down the steps in her high heels.

By the time she appeared on the landing and finally looked up, Ashton and Duncan were there waiting for her.

Dressed magnificently in black tuxedos, their tall and muscular frames clearly on display under the fine tailoring of their suits, they took her breath away. She was once again mesmerized at how amazingly good-looking they were. Thick silky eyebrows. Thick long enviable eyelashes. Jaws so marvelously structured and angular, dusted with perfectly groomed stubble, made addictive to look at.

But as their gaze slid from her face, from her eyes to her lips, and down her body she was reminded of all the deviant and delicious things they were capable of doing to her.

The same hands that gave her such indescribable pleasure, could also yield a kind of punishment on her ass that rendered her utterly sore but aroused still the same. Those lips of theirs could kiss her until she felt as if she were floating on a cloud, but she also knew the earth-moving piercing sensation of their teeth on her nipples, on her clit, on her lips and flesh when she misbehaved.

She experienced the same visceral reaction every time she looked at them and it seemed to be the same whether she was in heat or not. Her body flushed with heat and the thin pair of panties she wore became soaked with wetness for them.

Suddenly shy, her cheeks heated up even more as they continued to look at her. Her breath faltered as the neared, then slipped in on either side of her.

“You look stunning,” Ashton said softly against her ear. He kissed her cheek then neck and she sighed in delight.

“Absolutely gorgeous,” Duncan offered on the other side of her, placing his lips on her neck too, at the same spot as Ashton. They kissed her claim marks and gasped as she felt that kiss travel through her whole body and made her pulse with need.

They guided her into the grand hall and Farren stared in wide-eyed wonder at the room. Decorated with the same magical vision of a ball out of a fairytale, Amanda had outdone herself.

From the stunning arrangement of flowers, the embellished chandeliers, the gold and purple adorned tables and chairs, the champagne fountain, to an actual fountain in the middle of the room with water pouring from the mouth of a wolf into a gold-rimmed pool. But once she had taken in the beautiful room, Farren started to see the people in it and panic gripped her nerves.

Set an injured little bird in front of her or a hurt eight-hundred-pound alligator and she’d be in her element. Place her in a social setting and she felt like one of the varieties of ichthyoid, completely out of water.

She had already envisioned herself turning around and leaving like an awkward social coward. But she shook her head and decided not to go there. Instead, she opted to remain regal, graceful, proud, all the adjectives Amanda had been drumming into her head now that she was the Maximillian omega. It was time she acted the part too.

She didn’t know if she had imagined it or not but the welcome she received had been forced. As if everyone who came to congratulate or introduce themselves seemed to be acting out of duty rather than actually liking her.

Of course. How stupid to forget she wasn’t a purebreed. She had physically upset the legendary status of the Maximillian twins by entering their lives. That thought lingered on her mind even while she smiled and pretended everything was okay.

The twins hadn’t left her side, not for a moment and she relished their strength and tended to hide behind them.

“All right. You’ve hogged the girl enough and now I’m taking her from you,” Amanda

said coming up to them. “She needs to mingle. This is her party. She’s the Maximillian ambassador and the only way she’s going to earn her own loyalty is if she mingles. Gets to know the pack and the people. And she needs to do that by herself, not with your glowering wolves scaring anyone off before they even say two words to her.”

Stopping herself from wringing her hands together like a nervous idiot as Amanda led her to a group of females, Farren was surprised that they smiled at her with a genuineness she appreciated. They were a little older and she already had invites to two tea parties and was asked for help for a fundraising charity event.

Suddenly beaming that her first social encounter had gone so well, Farren made a detour to the bathroom. She needed a moment of privacy and to collect her thoughts. Maybe everything was going to be all right after all. And maybe she would fall pregnant soon too.

But as she entered the luxurious facility with its coffered ceilings and fragrance like fresh-cut roses, the sound of whispered voices caught her attention.

She would have never stopped to eavesdrop under any other circumstances, but when she heard her name spoken with such disdain, she grew curious and quietly slipped into a cubicle without being detected.

“She’s just after their money.”

“And their faces. And their bodies. How can they be so dreamlike?” another voice whined.

“I don’t care what she’s after. She got Sara’s mom kicked out of the pack and since our loyalties lie with Sara, we can never be friends with her. Does that make it clearer for you, Bri?”

“I only meant that she’s the alphas’ mate and maybe we should treat her with a little more respect and not talk about her behind her back this way at her own party. And to be fair, Laura Brenner did try to have her claim marks removed. We all know she could have died in the process.”

“But she didn’t. The alphas swooped in and saved her. I should ever be so lucky to have such twin alpha kings coming to my rescue that way. They just love her so much and I wish that was me. She’s the luckiest girl in the world.”
