“I can’t decide if I want a daughter-in-law or a son-in-law. I think I want both,” she said, staring at a picture I had taken of Kayla while she was sleeping.

“She is so adorable,” she squealed.

I went from crying to laughing as Vina went through the other pictures, leaving sweet and funny comments.

Vina gave me a pep talk on how to tell Tristan about Kayla as she drove me to the Sanchesters’ estate. I was nervous, as if I were about to give a conference speech. I didn’t know how he was going to react. If he was going to hate me after I told him, then it would be okay.

“You can do it!” Vina yelled after me as I walked to the large gates.

The maid who opened the door stared at the stain on my top before looking at my face. I ran up the stairs to Tristan’s room. I still had to tell the whole family about Grey, or maybe they had already seen it on the local news channel. I opened the door without knocking. Tristan was typing on his phone with one hand while the other was around Kayden, who was sleeping on top of him. I was worried about his arm and stomach, where he was still healing.

“Where the hell have you been?”

I paused at the doorway, feeling the anger radiating from him.

“I’m coming from the police station. Detective Emily called,” I said with a sigh and walked into the room, closing the door behind me.

“You should have told me or someone. I was worried.” He sounded relieved as he put his phone down.

“It was urgent.” I leaned down and placed a kiss on Kayden’s head.

“What’s that on your top?”

“Vina spat her drink on me.”

He furrowed his eyebrows and waited for an explanation. I waited for him to ask about what had happened at the police station, but he didn’t.

“Well, Grey pleaded guilty, and … I saw the evidence.”

He didn’t look surprised. Was I the only one shocked at this discovery?

“He should have come for me, not you or Kayden. And that nice lady didn’t deserve to die. Maybe I should have never returned. You or our little boy wouldn’t have been in danger,” he said and looked down at Kayden with guilt.

“But at the same time, I don’t wanna be away from you or Kayden. We created a beautiful little human, a piece of you and me. It means the world to me, and if that makes me selfish, then it’s okay,” he said, placing a kiss on Kayden’s head, the same spot my lips had been.

“He is going to be a charmer,” he said, stroking his hair.

I couldn’t fight the smile on my face, I was happy to see him like this, but something was missing. I should tell him about Kayla now.

“Tristan, there’s something you need to know about Kayden.” I walked to the chaise lounge and sat down.

“What’s wrong?” He tensed.

“Kayden is …”

The door burst open, cutting me off.

“There you are. I have been looking all over for you,” Nana said in a low tone, trying not to wake the baby. “Can I talk to you for a few minutes?”

“Sure.” I took a glance at Tristan before leaving the room.

I followed her into a small living room that had vintage furnishings. The green floral wallpaper was a nice contrast to the red couch and tall shelves in the corner, filled with books with thick spines engraved with gold fonts. She smiled at me after we sat down. I noticed her gray hair looked shorter.

“Tea?” she asked as she picked up the teapot that looked like an artifact with a bright gold rim.

“No. I just had a drink not too long ago.”

“How have you been, dear?”
