“Detained? Grey is in jail?” I sat up in my seat.
“For now, till we’re done with our investigation,” Detective James replied.
“There must be some kind of mistake somewhere,” I said in disbelief.
Why would Grey want to hurt me or my baby? How did he know about Kayden? How long had he known? There was no way Grey was behind the attack.
“We’ll be leaving now, and we’ll keep you updated. We’ll explain everything when we wrap up the whole investigation. Have a lovely day.” She gave me a kind smile and left with Detective James, who just threw his hand in salute.
“Can you believe them? They think Grey tried to kill us.” I laughed humorlessly.
I turned to Tristan and found his eyes closed. I knew he was pretending to be asleep. I groaned and sank into my seat. Grey wasn’t a killer.
“He is not the one. I’m sure they’ll let him go once they are done with their investigation.”
Tristan didn’t say anything. He turned his face away from me and moved Kayden closer to him. My lips curled upward at Kayden’s tiny frame snuggling closer to Tristan. Tristan tilted his head to create room for Kayden’s small head.
I exhaled and looked down at my plain nails, chipped at the edges. They had interrogated all my friends. Vina was still mad at me. I’d expected her to pay me a visit after hearing about the attack, but she hadn’t. I reached for my phone and dialed her line. I waited for her to send me to voice mail, like she’d been doing for the past few days, but she picked up the call.
“Vina?” I whispered.
She didn’t say anything. Maybe she didn’t know she had picked up the call.
“Vina, are you there?”
“What room are you in?” she asked with an aggravated sigh.
“Room? Are you at the hospital?”
“Why else would I be asking, dumbass?”
Okay, she was still mad at me.
“Thirty-five, second floor. I miss you, and I’m—”
She ended the call before I could say more.
“Vixen is coming?” Tristan asked, not sounding happy.
I was sure Adrian had told him about Vina.
“Yeah, and I’ll advise you not to call her that when she gets here.”
“She hates me,” he said and turned to look at me, guilt and sadness painting his face.
“Does she have any reason not to?” I mumbled, staring at the door.
I had a feeling he’d heard me. There was an awkward silence in the room.
“If you’d never had Kayden, would you ever want to see me again?” he asked.
The door opened before I could answer his question. Saved by the door. I wasn’t sure of my answer anyway. I was thankful to Vina for showing up at the right time.
“Vina!” I stood up with a big smile to welcome her, but she glared at me and walked to the bed.
“Hi, Vina,” Tristan greeted.
She pretended not to hear him. She stopped at the foot of the bed and stared at Kayden for a long second. I gave her a broad smile when she faced me. She had a straight look on her small face. Face taut, rage in her hazel eyes, and lips in a straight line, she looked like she wanted to punch me.
