“I thought I heard that you guys were her friend?”
I bit the inside of my lip to keep from screaming. I wish I’d brought a gun with me. Maybe the sight of it would work in getting this guy to spill his guts.
“Don’t even answer that,” he said, raising his hands. “Frankly, I don’t want to know if you are Bratva or Italian.”
I stiffened, and I heard Natasha gasp softly beside me.
“Maddy disappeared our junior year. She was gone for a week before someone found her body.” He paused, and I wondered if he was doing it for dramatic effect. Who the hell was this guy? I wondered. How did he know the truth?
“Or at least, what someone wanted us to believe was her body.”
My thoughts came to a halt as I focused on what he said. “What do you mean?” I asked. I felt my palms starting to coat with sweat, and I wanted to wipe them down the front of my pants, but instead, I remained still as I waited with anxious breath for whatever I was going to learn next.
“Maddy was pregnant. The corpse…it wasn’t.”
