“I’m pregnant,” she told me. The words came out in a rush, and I wasn’t sure that I had heard her correctly.
“What?” I asked.
“I’m pregnant.”
It took a minute for Sasha’s words to sink in.
“Dom?” Sasha asked. “Are you alright?”
I wasn’t sure. I had thought about having children. I’d planned to get Sasha pregnant and get rid of her. But now that there was a real life baby, I wasn’t sure how I felt.
Looking at Sasha, I could see that she was nervous. The happy smile on her face had fallen a bit, and I realized that my hesitance had caused her to become unsure.
“A baby,” I whispered. “Wow.”
“Wow?” she asked. “What does that mean?”
I hadn’t thought about what it would mean to be a father. But as I stood across from Sasha, I knew instinctively that this baby would be one of the best things that had ever happened to me.
“It means that I’m so happy,” I told her before I took her in my arms.
Sasha squealed as I danced her around. She giggled as I pressed kisses to her neck.
“Put me down,” Sasha said.
I did, but I didn’t take my hands off of her. “I hope you know that you aren’t going to be leaving my sight for the next nine months.”
Sasha rolled her eyes, but I could tell that my words secretly pleased her. She’d never admit it, but I knew that she liked my protective nature.
“I love you,” I told her.
Her smiled was bright, and I promised myself that I would spend the rest of my life making sure that Sasha smiled every day of her life.
“I love you,” I told her, and those words were a vow to her that I hoped she understood.
Sasha might have started as the daughter of my enemy, but now, she was the most precious person in my life.
