“I know what you are about to say,” he said.

“Do you?” I asked. “Please, enlighten me.”

“You can smell what I did,” he said. “And you don’t like it.”

“What were you thinking?” I asked, trying to force down the growing sense of irritation which had started the second I walked through the door.

He shrugged. “I have no idea anymore. It happened. And there’s nothing I can do to change that now.”

Cadence came back into the living room and headed for the door. “Okay, she’s all set. Text me if you need anything else.”

She turned around and faced me and Ezra before she walked through the door. Her lips curved into a frown and a crease appeared above her nose. “Did I miss something?”

“Not exactly,” I said. “We’re fine.”

At the same time, Ezra said, “Kind of.”

She looked between the two of us and sighed. “Okay…”

“Don’t worry about it,” I said. “It’s house stuff that needs addressed.”

“All right, well, if anything changes, let me know,” she said and pulled open the door.

“I will. Thank you again,” I said, meeting her outside as she took a step onto the porch.

She smiled and faced me. She kept her voice low, to keep her words between the two of us. “I like this one. A lot. She’s good for you.”

I huffed and gave her a sad smile. “She’s also temporary.”

She sighed through her next words. “Go figure. They always are.”

I snorted. “Yeah. Maybe.”

“Someday, someone is going to make you temporary,” she said. “Unless you wisen up and settle down already. I want to be an aunt.”

I shook my head. “Not now, Cadence.”

She hmphed and then turned to walk away. I shook my head and wondered where she found the nerve to be so blunt and bold when it came to my relationships. Normally she had much more finesse than she just had. Eventually, I decided her opinion didn’t matter when it came to Toni. I had other things to attend to. An important discussion to have with one of my roommates.

“Goodbye, Cadence,” I said into the darkness as her form faded into the night.

She waved at me, keys in hand. They jingled as she waved back. I watched her climb into her car and drive away. Once she was out of sight I turned around and closed the door behind me. I settled my attention on Ezra who stood in the middle of the floor, with his hands in his pockets. “We’re so not done with this conversation.”

He sighed and moved to lean against the back of the couch. He stared at me waiting for me to continue. But I didn’t have a clue as to where to start. Everything was a mess and him having sex with Toni made matters worse.

That wasn’t how we were supposed to do things. His actions weren’t part of the agreement we had when we all decided to live together.

“Look,” he started. “I don’t regret what I did. Should it have happened? Probably not. But it did, and I refuse to feel guilty for it.”

“It’s whatever so long as you don’t start a relationship with her. She’s not staying,” I said.

“Oh, I’m well aware of her place here isn’t for long,” he said. “My eyes aren’t exactly closed when it comes to her leaving.”

I stared at him, confused. “What do you mean?”

“She explained everything that happened in a bit more detail. When she showed up that night, she was heading to Washington. She mentioned she was going to visit a sister coven when her ex showed up in the way he had. She intends to continue with that trip because she needs to find answers to some coven problem in the city.”

I nodded. “When did you find this out?”
