“Hey, Savannah,” I said.
“Where are you calling me from? What’s wrong?” she asked, words rushing over the line.
I gave her the run down. The men listened in, intent on every word I spoke. I remembered smaller details of everything as I explained things to her. In fact, the more time I had away from Jared, the more clarity I was able to gain.
The revelation struck me as odd, and I decided to keep the information to myself for the time being. I wanted to figure out the reason for it before sharing the news with anyone.
“You’re fucking kidding me?” she said once I was finished. “The asshole not only laid hands on you but he also tried to kill you! If I ever catch up to him, he’s going to wish he never met you.”
“I appreciate the thought, but I doubt hurting him would help,” I said.
She took a deep breath and sighed over the line. “I understand. I’m sorry. I can come pick you up if you would like.”
“Yes, that would be amazing,” I breathed into the phone.
“It may take me a couple of days though before I can leave here. Are you good to stay where you are until I can come out?” she asked.
“I am not sure, I’ll ask,” I said and faced Ezra. “She wants to know if it would be okay for me to stay here a couple of days until she can pick me up.”
“Absolutely not,” Rin said. “We’re already risking enough. Bringing more people here we don’t know is out of the question.”
“Of course,” Ezra said. “Stay as long as you need.”
“Oh sure, ignore the logic!” Rin snapped.
I turned and faced Luke. “Are you okay with it as well?”
“Say no,” Rin said.
Luke glared at his friend. “I have to think about what is best for everyone involved before making a decision.”
“Yes. Finally,” Rin said. “Someone who gets it.”
“I said ‘everyone involved’ for a reason, Rin,” he said, voice sounding strained. “That includes Toni.”
“Oh of course,” Rin muttered.
“I’m going to have to call you back on that one,” I said to Savannah.
“Call me when you can,” she said. “I’ll keep my phone on me.”
“I will,” I said and hung up the line, handing the phone back to Ezra.
Coming to the cabin might have been a mistake. In the moment, it seemed like the best decision. But I didn’t want to put the men out. If I needed to, I would figure something else out. But the idea wasn’t as inviting as staying put for the next few days. At least, as long as Jared was outside somewhere.
I still couldn’t figure out how he was able to find me. Tried as I might, that was one thing that still didn’t make any sense to me. He was likely somewhere in the woods that surrounded the place. Watching and waiting for me to leave.
I sighed and handed the satellite phone back to Rin. He snatched it out of my hand.
“I understand if my staying here longer might be too much to ask, especially after everything you’ve already done for me,” I said. “If you would prefer, I can leave. I don’t want to overstay my welcome, and I certainly don’t want to be the cause of friction between the three of you.”
“Nonsense,” Ezra said.
“I don’t mind your being here,” Luke added. “But I do have to take into consideration everyone’s position in this matter. It may take me some time. Until then, I think you should get what rest you can. If in the morning, I decide it’s best to have you leave, then I will take you somewhere myself.”
I nodded. “I understand.”
My anxieties started to spike again. My fate rested in the hands of three men who were strangers to me. Men who had no idea who I was or had any stake in my wellbeing. By shifters who were put off by witches, lived secluded, and were accustomed to no visitors.
