I’m relishing this way too much, snaking my hands around Kaia’s neck. I don’t want it to stop, hence why it takes everything in me not to object when Kaia eases back to release the cloud now trapped in her lungs, the blunt still lodged in her grip.

She blows the cherry out, regarding me more intensely than ever before, her chest heaving slightly, no doubt from unforeseen adrenaline racing through her veins. When her fingers brush over her bottom lip, I swear I feel them run across mine too. “What was that about?”

My heart sinks a little, but I don’t show as much, shrugging a shoulder instead. “She was coming onto my date. I don’t share well.”

Kaia’s lips spread in a devious grin. “I’m not complaining, I just wasn’t—”

“Expecting it?” I chuckle. “I know, neither was I, but like I said, she was coming onto you and I needed to get the point across. She’s a bitch anyway.”

I’m quite proud of myself, actually. I feel empowered. I always thought Kaia would be the one to make the first move, and yet, here we are.

Nodding, she slides her arms around my waist and drops her forehead to mine. “We can’t go back from this, Jules, you know that right?” she whispers, lips hovering so close, I can nearly taste her again. “I won’t be able to pretend this didn’t happen and just go on like normal.”

“Normal is overrated, Kai,” I whisper back.

“I know, but—”

“Shhh,” I set a finger to her lips, “We’re not doing this right now. You promised no questions for tonight, that you’d just roll with it.”

I know we’ll have to talk about this eventually, figure out what all of this means, but I just want one night to test the brewing waters and see what happens.

“You’re right, I did,” she concedes, nipping my finger. “No questions tonight. But if we’re not gonna finish this”—she holds up the blunt—“At least lets go inside and grab another drink before you catch me by surprise again.”

Chapter Seven

Kaia

I woke up to Jules in my bed. I don’t know how, don’t remember being that drunk, but apparently, we were. Nothing happened, though. That much I can tell you.

I’d know if we had.

Still, there was that sense of weirdness I’d been dreading as she yanked me out of bed. Not too heavy, but enough to make my head spin with all the unanswered questions I have. A part of me is already whispering “I told you so” and yeah, it could be right.

She wanted this, though.

I was followingherlead, rolling with it like she asked me to. If she didn’t want my hands on her,my lips, she’d never would’ve initiated it—not even to get rid of Izaak. We had an issue like this reversed in the past, and not once did she suggest anything like this to get the dude to leave her alone.

“Alright, Kai, you ready?” she asks from the other side of the dressing room wall.

It’s pretty early still and I’m wiped, but here we are, fucking dress shopping. I don’t even think there’s other people in the store, that’s how early it is.

“Yup, this thing was pretty easy to slip on.” Smoothing my hands down the silver satin, I turn to check the back one last time. It’s got two thin straps criss-crossing and dipshellalow. “I like it.”

“Okay, c’mon, I wanna see! Three… Two… One. Go!”

Five seconds later, we’re both slipping out behind the curtain into the corridor. Her face lights up, mouth popping open as she takes me. Minewantsto do the same, but I keep the drool at bay andtrynot to ogle her from head to toe.

“I can’t believe I’m about to say this, you know how I feel about options and this is only the first one you’ve tried on, but youhaveto get it. It was made for you, Kai,” she squeals. “Turn around, let me see the back!”

I do as she’s asked, pivoting slowly and glancing over my shoulder with batting eyelashes for added effect.

“Yuuup,”she nods, “that’s the one. The silver pops beautifully against your skin tone and it fits you like a fucking glove. Can we say coke bottle?” Her hands fall to my waist, turning me toward the mirror beside us. “Girl lookin’ like a whole snack.”

“Me? Look at you,” I chuckle. “Have you seen yourself?”

There’s something about Jules in red. I don’t know if it’s because she’s so fair or if it just compliments the auburn of her hair, but it’s one of her best colors. It’s loud and screams of confidence.

Sexiness.
