Kaia chokes out a laugh and squeezes my hand. “Easy there, Rocky. You’re not punching no one. Drunk frat boys and ass grabs are part of the college experience.”
I’m not here for the frat boys. The ass grabs, though….“Yeah, well the same goes for you when you knee some dude in the nuts for copping a feel.”
“Na, I have you, remember? My date.”
The way she says it, with that devious ass smile… My face splits in two as we start for the entrance. She’s actually fucking rolling with it.“I believe as my date you’re required to get me a drink.”
She nods and ushers me up the stairs first, never breaking our hold. “That’s exactly what we’re gonna to do when we get inside.”
As we clear the threshold, we find a mostly clear pathway to the stairs. Everyone’s plastered up against the corridor walls or roaming from one room to the next. Several eye Kaia and I as we stalk past, but I ignore their questioning gazes.
If I want to be me, to really live asme,I’m gonna have to get used to it. There’s no shortage of people waiting to look upon you with disdain for being different.
Somewhere on the third floor we find Winnie and the lot of them. Viv doesn’t appear too happy to see me, and honestly, I’m not really feeling her vibe anymore after her petty little commentary a couple days ago. Tyrone I feel bad for, though. He took one look at the way Kaia held my hand and knew I was off-limits, at least for tonight. Danny’s too drunk to even realize I’m really here, and Winnie is trying her damnedest not to ogle him.
Yeah, I’m definitely not doing this all night.
Leaning into Kaia, I blurt in her ear over the music, “I don’t think I wanna chill with them all night.”
“We’re not,” she smiles. “Just sit. I’m gonna grab some drinks, we’ll hang for a few and then go upstairs. I think Jazzy and them are up there.”
Ugh.
Jazzy.
I barely know her, but from what Kai’s told me, her intentions are loud and clear...and I don’t like them.
I don’t get much time to dwell on it, though. Kaia returns with a half-empty bottle of Jager—my favorite—and within five minutes, I down three shots worth, flooding my veins with that tingly, familiar warmth before going for the beer Winnie offers me. You know what they say: “Beer before liquor, you’ve never been sicker. Liquor before beer, you’re in the clear.”
I’m not exactly keeping track of time, but half way through the second beer, it all hits me. I’m feelinggood, all warm and fuzzy, flushed. Whatever happens now; I’m ready. I don’t think nearly as much when I have alcohol in my system, and I doubt I’ll be able to think at all after the blunt Kaia’s got in her bra. Not that she knows I’m planning to partake tonight…
Out of fucking nowhere, Winnie pulls me out of my seat and drags me to an empty spot amidst all the people dancing. I’m about to protest and go sit my ass back down, I don’t want to dance, at least not with her, when she throws her arms around my neck and yells in my ear, “Am I crazy for wanting to hook up with Danny?”
My lips curl.I fucking knew it.
“No,” I shake my head, “I mean, wrap it up; he’s a little slut, but no, I don’t think you’re crazy.”
Winnie laughs, but I can see the longing in her eyes as she watches him across the room. “I kinda wanna try the fuck buddy thing. I’ve never had one.”
Ooh, no, girl.“It’s not all it’s cracked out to be. Unless you’rereallylooking for a no strings sort of thing, someone always ends up hurt.”
At least that’s what I’ve seen. I’ve never experienced it personally, but almost everyone in my life who’s gone through with something like that has ended up with a broken heart. I’ve had a few one-night stands, can handle that, but never a fuck buddy. If we vibe well, I get too attached, which would completely defeat the purpose of having that sort of a relationship.
“You’re probably right,” she groans, draining her cup of whatever the fuck she had in it. “Fuck it, I’m just gonna worry about tonight. Wish me luck!”
I don’t get to. She abandons me on the makeshift dance floor before the words even form, bounding through the masses to where Danny’s chilling with a few of the jocks.
Well okay then.
As I’m pivoting to head back to the couch, I nearly run head-first into Kaia. She’s standing there with that curious look in her eyes. “Jazzy just got here; we’re gonna smoke. You wanna wait here or…?”
“Nope,” I pop the P. “I’m going with you.”
Kaia’s brow perks. “You’re gonna smoke?”
I shrug, not wanting to commit just yet.“Maybe.”
That gleaming smile of hers, the one that always wildly flips my stomach at the sight of it, spreads her lips as she offers me her hand. “Fuck yes. Let’s do this.”
