“What? No. Why would you think that?”
“Well, you’re staring wordlessly so I’m assuming here.”
“Don’t assume, Jules,” I laugh, nervously almost as I head for the door. She caught me fucking ogling her.“The whole fit is perfect.”
“I was gonna throw on some heels but—”
“Na, it’s a dorm party. Heels are suicide waiting to happen.” A joke ‘cause Jules can maneuver six-inch heels like no one’s business, but also not a joke. It’s gonna be packed in there, not to mention the plethora of alcohol at our disposal. All it’ll take is one too many shots or a shove from someone too close and she’ll find herself making friends with the floor.
“So you think Izaak’s gonna be there?”
My shoulders fly up to my ears as I’m turning the lock. “Ugh.Yes.”
“Good. We’re gonna get rid of him.”
When I peek at her from over my shoulder, she smiles this seemingly angelic smile. “What?”
“How are we gonna get rid of him, that’s what.”
“Well…” she blushes, smile widening. “He thinks you’re ‘too pretty’ to be gay because he hasn’t seen you with anyone. See how quick he was to assume you were fucking me when I opened the door?”
Why, God?
The quick reel of images that flashes through my mind at her question is obscene. I can’t even help this shit.
“Yeah,” I swallow, slowly pivoting to face her.
“Let’s make him think he’s right. Maybe if he actually sees you with me, he’ll accept you aren’t lying and will leave you alone.”
What…the fuck do I even say to that?
When I fail to say anything, she reaches around me and turns the lock the rest of the ways, reaching for the knob. “You know I’m right, and I already asked you to be my date so…”
Nope. We’re not going anywhere. My arm flies out, hand falling to her waist before I can stop myself. We’re so close, I can smell the mintiness of her breath. “What is happening, Jules?”
She knows exactly what I’m talking about, too. What is this? What are we doing? That seemingly innocent smile returns. “Do you trust me?”
With my life.“What do you think?”
“Then just roll with it, okay?” Her lips press to my cheek, and just as quickly, she’s out the door, hauling me out behind her.
Chapter Six
Jules
The weekend Kaia and I packed up to move, my dad sat down with us, handed us a beer, and told us to live. Yes, our degrees are important, too, but the point of his speech was for us to live life to fullest.
I took him seriously.
This right here, finally crossing a line I’ve wanted to cross for a while is me living my best goddamn life.
Might’ve taken actually seeing Kaia with someone else, but once I caught myself secretly hoping and praying their relationship would end so I could have my turn, I knew what I felt was real.
When we arrive at the building, there’s peopleeverywhere. Joyner Lucasblares so loud from inside that his voice ripples through the air outside. Reaching for Kaia’s hand, I lace our fingers together as we stare ahead.
“You can’t get more college than this. You ready?” she asks.
“If some handsy motherfucker touches me, Iwillpunch him,” I state, already dreading the amount of people.
