I’m all kinds of dizzy when we sit down. Roman asked me if my legs hurt, then Holden flashed me both of his, including the sleeve I got for his prosthetic on his birthday while saying he was only having problems with one of his.
Roman rubs up and down my neck, stealing my attention before tugging on a little lock of hair. Need pulses through me, demanding and hot, but I can’t exactly be missing from my entire wedding reception- at least not this early.
I suck in a slow breath then look at my dress. “After my dance with my dad, I have to go and get pinned.”
“What do you mean?” Roman asks.
“Well, I can’t have this giant dress the whole time! So we’re going to pin it up a little and put shoes on me so I can walk around without anyone worried about stepping on me.” I say.
Roman lifts my dress to see my bare feet and chuckles. “I didn’t even realize you were still barefoot.”
“She’s so much shorter though!” Gunner says, placing a glass of champagne in front of me before kissing the top of my head. “Little Sophie.”
I roll my eyes, but lean back and kiss him. He licks along my lip and when he draws back, he winks at me. “Close to a Spiderman kiss, sweets. Thank you.”
We eat a little more, talk about the wedding and what’s left at the reception, and then I’m called up to dance with my dad. He’s already all red in the face. I hold his shoulders as he wraps his arms around me.
“You’re so beautiful, Sophie. I love seeing you this happy and full of life.” He says.
“Daddy, it’s all because of you, you know that right?” I ask.
He shakes his head. I lift his chin. “It is. Because you invited me out here and wanted to fix things. When I sat down to dinner with you and Mom all happy and excited with my relationship doing well … it was like a dream come true. I didn’t think I could ever be happier than right then.”
“And here you are.” He strokes my cheek. “Bright and sparkly and getting married.”
I hug him and he takes care of his tears so I don’t. When he draws back, he spins me around. “Do you remember at that father-daughter dance we went to? You were only seven.”
“I remember dancing on your feet the night before so I could learn a dance.”
“We went to the school and then you ran off with your friends leaving us dads to talk. You didn’t dance with me at all!” He laughs. “You wanted to do everything and anything you could with your friends. I’m just glad Valerie isn’t stealing you away now.”
“Nope. This is all about us.” I promise, squeezing him. “I love you, Dad. Thank you for being a part of this wedding and supporting me when a lot of dads would have drawn the line at marrying four men.”
He laughs and kisses my forehead. “You’ve never been a normal little girl, Sophie. I’m just glad I can be here for you. And I hope that if you have questions or still need something you’ll call me.”
“Always, Daddy,” I assure him. “You set the bar high for me.”
He snorts and shakes his head.
“You did. That’s why it took four amazing people to come close.”
He keeps dancing with me. As soon as we leave the floor, my husbands are called up to dance with their mothers or partners. Roman takes his mother to the dance floor, then Holden asks Nonna to dance. She shyly puts a hand to her face, but doesn’t say no. Gunner’s mom practically throws herself at him which makes me laugh. Then Nick and his mom.
I take pictures on my phone before resting my hand on my chin as I watch them. There is so much love in this room. Roman and his mother talking softly, Gunner and his mom cracking jokes, but the fierce affection in his eyes makes it clear how much it means to him. Nick gives his mom a twirl that makes her beam while Holden stays hunched over to make dancing with Nonna easier.
I wipe at my eyes. How can I still have tears left after all this? Valerie grabs my hand. “Cut that out or you’re going to ruin your makeup.”
“I can’t help it, look at them.”
“I mean wiping that close.” She giggles. She sits next to me and looks at my men as they dance. “I have to admit, they’re good guys. I’m sorry my speech wasn’t as great as the others. Gunner’s been amazing in all honesty. I was so surprised when he showed up at my door and said he wanted to talk to me so I wouldn’t hate him. It says a lot.”
“He’s a man of action.” I smile.
“I see that.” She squeezes my hand with a huge smile spreading across her face. “They’re good for you, Sophie. And I love how happy they make you, how confident you are, how good things are getting for you and for your future.”
I hug her and sniffle. “You’re supposed to stop the tears, not make them worse.”
We laugh and she moves to my lap when the guys return. Others start dancing and having a good time and I can’t believe how much fun everyone is having. Valerie drags me to the dance floor, but she’s quickly stolen by Hunter while Chase takes my hands.
