Sophie laughs and takes a long drink of wine.
“But I knew then that you all were something special. I’d never seen Roman smile like that. I’d never seen the four of you guys so light-hearted, so quick to put work to the side, so eager to explore. Danny and I made a bet then that a wedding, at least one, would happen in a year.”
Danny raises her water and Gio shouts happily, making me grin. The little man already wants to be included in everything. And my eyes flick to Gunner as I remember him holding Gio. So much progress.
“This is a rarity, a beautiful melding of souls that I know is going to last. They bring out the best in each other and I can’t wait to join again for the ten-year vow renewals. To a once of a lifetime wedding.”
Valerie comes up next. She sighs and looks us over. “I’m supposed to say something sappy and sappy isn’t really my go-to. I just recently met these four men and I love the way they make her light up. I still have some reservations, but I think that’s life for most people … except Sophia. When she loves something or someone she’s all in. The hesitations come later if they do at all. So you four are lucky as hell that she chose you and I know you’ll all make her a very happy woman.” She holds up her glass and the small crowd cheers.
She sits down and a few people clap and then we move on to the food. And the food is amazing. It’s so good that I almost moan. As I’m digging in, I block most things out. Then Roman nudges me.
I look at him and he motions around to people clinking their utensils against their glasses. They want us to kiss. Sophie, mouth full of food looks around like a surprised little chipmunk. She’s so fucking cute, I can’t deal with it.
I get up and kiss one of her chubby cheeks. She tries to swallow, but Gunner turns her head and kisses her right on the lips. She manages to swallow and then Holden kisses her and Roman does as well, right on her nose.
It breaks her. She laughs loudly, coughs, and laughs some more before reaching for her water. She shakes her head at us. “You guys are going to kill me right here at the reception.”
“Blame the adoring crowd, sweets,” Gunner says.
Holden chuckles and Roman rubs the back of her neck. I hug her from behind. “If you think we’re going to let you off the hook for the rules of a wedding, you are wrong, missy. You are going to be smothered with kisses all night.”
“No complaints, except not when my mouth is full.” She points at me with her knife.
We manage to survive the meal, then it’s on to the first dances. And we go in reverse order. She and Roman slide into a dance. They move across the floor amazingly. No lessons needed. I take a slow breath, ready to jump in, but I know we’re all getting half our song.
I can tell that they’re talking as they dance. Sophie beams at whatever Roman tells her and she strokes over his shoulders and down his biceps. Her eyes catch the light and sparkle. Gunner pats my ass. “You’re up next, Nicky.”
I don’t even care that he’s just called me that. I used to. It would guarantee a frustrated snap, but I can’t wait to have her in my arms again. The slow Italian song is beautiful and I can tell that Roman is singing along towards the end. Sophie stands on her toes when he pulls her close, but his lips curl into a smile and he twirls her under one arm, the other, then spins her out and into my grasp.
It’s a remake of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” that focuses on the vocals and the ukulele at first. Sophie melts in my grasp. “Hi, Nick.”
“Sweetheart.” I dip her back, pull her up and twist her under my arm until I pull her back against me, my hand on her belly as I keep guiding the dance. “Are you happy with the venue?”
“I’m happy with you.” She sighs, putting her hand in mine.
I turn her around and guide one of her hands to my shoulder and keep the other, kissing her knuckles. “This is the perfect song.”
“It’s true,” She says against my neck before pressing a kiss to the same spot. “I couldn’t help it. I can’t help it now. Every day.”
I press my lips to her temple. “I love you so much. I can’t say it enough.”
“And I’ll never get tired of it.” She promises. “Of any of you. I … I didn’t know I could be this happy.”
“You’re glowing.” I kiss her full on the mouth and she gives me a tease of her tongue.
I groan softly and stroke down her back, holding her waist in my hand. “You’re going to make me forget the steps.”
She laughs and shakes her head at me as she rests her head against my chest. “I don’t care about the steps.”
“No?”
“Or the details. I just needed you four. I’m sorry I got so pissy through the planning. I’m sorry for being a stressed-out mess.”
“You weren’t the only mess,” I assure her.
She smiles and stands on her toes, pressing her forehead against mine as her breath rushes over my face. She strokes my face as her lips part. It’s an invitation, right here in front of everyone to kiss me. Which is still an adjustment. Not that we’ve ever shied away from PDA, but all four of us getting to kiss her in front of a crowd without any worrying or issues.
I stroke up her spine until I can touch her soft skin and our noses brush as my eyes start to close. We’re so close I feel her heart racing in her chest. She gasps as our lips brush, but then I spin her into Gunner as John Legend starts swinging.
