He’s not buying it.
“I was convinced you were out there looking for her,” he says.
That’s a trap.
Taking another swig, I try to buy some time. I can’t see his eyes as I tip my gaze down, but I feel his stare.
It burns into my face.
I finally set the glass down, cross my arms over my chest and look up.
“I’m not going to do anything he won’t do,” I say sternly.
He has no reaction. Only tilts his eyebrows up a little.
“Since when are you so in line with him?”
I smile.
“Aren’t you? You didn’t go out there to look for her once he said he wouldn’t do it.”
A shadow flits through his eyes.
“I had my reasons.”
He sets himself in motion and slides into a chair not far from me.
“What reasons?”
“Nothing in particular,” he says, running his fingers through his hair, evading my eyes.
“Taking it slowly, huh?” I mutter.
“Not exactly.”
He flicks his eyes up.
We finally connect, trying our best to establish a modicum of trust again. He sucks in a long breath that tilts his chest, his gaze trailing down briefly.
“I thought that taking turns on her was better than fighting for her.”
I crack a smile.
“Who’s fighting for her?”
He shoots his eyes at me.
“You know we’re getting to that point,” he says. “It’s just a matter of time.”
I shake my head, my lips parted into a crooked smile.
“How would I know? You had her. And Kai had her.”
He laughs.
“You’re fucking with me, right?” he says, cracking a smile.
Gesturing dismissively, he pushes up and walks to the bar, and I watch him pour himself a drink.
