There were two more students to tutor before Evie found me. “So, Max Rawling said he caught you and Shane in the shower.” She smiles. “True or false?”
“True.” I take my glasses off and lay my head on the desk. “I told him I didn’t want to be a dirty little secret, and he was true to his word.”
“And what’s the problem?”
“Are we dating? Fucking? Going steady?”
Laughing, Evie stands up. “Whoa there.”
“I’m rushing.”
“Marcus, it’s okay to be excited.” She comes over and sits next to me. “My parents tell me all the time, when you know. You know.”
“Yeah, but your parents are crazy in love.”
“So are yours. So is my sister and Vic and the police chief.” She giggles. “I mean, it’s happening all over.” She takes my hand. “It can happen for you, too.”
“Do you know that for his training, he runs seven days a week?”
“Blech.” She makes a yuck face. “Better him than me.”
“I ran a mile with him. It was really nice.” A soft sigh leaves me feeling like a lovesick fool.
“Soon you’ll be running every day with your boyfriend.”
My phone vibrates on the table, and Evie has it before I can even grab it.
Shane: Hey babe, do you have lunch plans?
Me: Nope. Wanna meet at That One Place?
Shane: Hell yeah! They have the best burgers and malts!
Me: What time?
Shane: I can meet you somewhere so we can go together
Me: I’m still in study room b, come get me.
Shane: You got it. See you soon. =-*
“Better get ready to see your man. You have a lunch date with him.” She hands me my phone back.
“What?”
“He’s coming here to meet you so you both can go to the diner for lunch.”
I look through the messages and look up at her. “What if I had plans?”
“Well, you did dumbass, with me. I’m just a good enough friend to let you out of your plans.”
Looking up, I see Shane walking towards us. “He’s here.”
“Hey, babe!” He walks in and comes around to me.
“You can kiss your man hello.” Evie giggles.
“Thanks.” He winks at her and then kisses me softly before looking back at her. “You’re Evelyn Malone, right?”
