Jamison really had no idea, because he didn’t know why. And he wasn’t going to ask. He saw the fear in Bryn’s eyes. Whatever had happened had scared her to the point where she believed that running and starting over was better than staying and facing the music.

Jamison had chosen the latter because, deep down, he didn’t want to lose his family.

Maybe Bryn did.

“I know you don’t think I’m being fair or even doing the right thing, but it’s not for you to decide.”

“You’re right. It’s not,” he agreed. “I want you to know that I will make sure Suzie stays as far away from you and your daughter as possible.”

“Thank you. I appreciate that.” She wiped her fingers on the napkin. “If you don’t mind, I need to get going. I’ve got a website to finish.” She smiled. “My boss is a pain in the ass.”

He laughed. He enjoyed how she could so quickly lighten the mood. “I look forward to seeing it.”

“Thanks for breakfast. I’ll talk to you soon.” Wrapping her arms around Zadie, who was bundled close to her chest, Bryn stood.

For a few moments, he contemplated racing up to her and offering to walk her to her car, but then he thought better of it. He understood how important it was for Bryn to be independent and do things for herself. It wasn’t like the sun was setting, and he didn’t need to worry about her being alone. This was a safe town, and the breakfast crowd had already started filling the park.

She was fine.

He, on the other hand, was not only out of his depth, but he’d also found himself wanting to ask a woman who’d just had a baby out on a date.
