“Is Beckett your direct supervisor? If he’s not, maybe there’s wiggle room in the policy,” Ellery suggests.

“There is no wiggle room.”

She frowns. “I hate to say it, but you need to nip this in the bud.”

“She means you should stop kissing Beckett before the situation worsens,” Juniper explains.

“I am familiar with the expression ‘nip in the bud’.” Although this is my first time actually saying the phrase since idioms can be misinterpreted and there is nothing worse than a misunderstanding.

“Are we advising her to ignore Beckett and the chemistry between them?” Ashlyn’s gaze bounces back and forth between Ellery, Aspen, and Juniper. “You’ve got to be joking.”

Juniper stands. “I’m not joking. Getting fired would hurt Lilac’s career and her career is important to her.”

Ashlyn’s nose wrinkles. “Is this one of those reverse psychology thingies? We’re telling her to avoid him, so all she can do is think about him.”

Juniper fast blinks. “Of course not.”

I narrow my eyes on her. I’m unsure as to whether she’s being truthful.

Aspen pats my shoulder. “Alrighty. You just avoid Mr. Grumpy Boss, and all will be well.” She motions toward the door, and everyone follows her.

When I set the alarm after they depart, I’m frowning. Were they being serious? All I need to do is avoid Beckett? On the surface, it appears to be a simple solution, but I can’t avoid my boss at work. It’s not professional.

Why did Beckett Dempsey have to show up at Clean Mountain Environment? I was perfectly content before he arrived. I had my career, my family, and various male companionship when I felt the need for sexual release.

But now I don’t want any other male companionship than Beckett. And my career is in jeopardy because of it. I knew Beckett was complicated. I didn’t realize he was trouble.
