Chapter 29

Trick someone – only effective in the event you force a person to do something she doesn’t want to do

My office door clicks closed, and I glance up to find Beckett standing in front of the door.

“What are you doing?” I ask despite knowing exactly what he’s doing.

This is the third time he’s come to my office today. I’ve managed to rebuff him each time, but I don’t know how long I can resist him. I’ve always prided myself on being able to control my emotions but against Beckett, my control doesn’t stand a chance.

He waggles his eyebrows. “What do you think?”

“I think we decided to keep our relationship a secret in the office, but everyone is going to figure it out if you keep coming into my office and shutting the door.”

“It’s nearly six. Everyone’s distracted with getting ready to leave for the evening.”

I check my watch. “It’s barely five-thirty. There’s another half an hour left of the workday.”

Beckett saunters my way and rounds my desk before leaning against it next to me. He crosses his legs at his ankles and his arms over his chest. He looks completely relaxed. I, however, am not.

I shove at him. “What are you doing? You’re too close to me.”

“Honey, I can get much closer,” he murmurs before sliding over until I’m forced to push my chair away from the desk.

He settles himself in front of me. “Much better.”

“I don’t know how this is better. I need to finish my work and now I can’t reach my computer.”

He braces his hands on my chair and leans forward until his face is mere inches from mine. “But now I can reach you and those luscious pink, pouty lips you have.”

I stare at his lips as they come closer while his fingers drag up my arms leaving goosebumps in their wake. His lips have nearly met mine when my telephone rings.

I sigh in disappointment before reaching forward to answer it, but he snatches it away before I can.

“What are you doing?” I hiss. “I need to answer my phone.”

“Promise me you’ll come home with me tonight and I’ll give you your phone.”

“You could have asked me instead of holding my phone hostage.”

He shrugs. “Would you have said yes?”

I’m confused by the question. Am I supposed to say no? Am I supposed to play hard to get? I don’t play games.

“Of course, I would say yes. You’re my boyfriend.”

He kisses me on the nose and hands me my phone, which has stopped ringing in the meantime.

“I’ll be ready to leave at six.”

“I planned to work until seven.”

“Six-thirty?”

I nod. I can compromise despite what my sisters think. Although, their idea of compromise is for me to do as they order. As usual, they don’t understand the concept properly.

At 6:25 p.m., Beckett sashays back into my office. “Time to go.”

I anticipated him arriving early and have nearly finished packing up. “I’ll follow you.”
