He chuckles. “And I’m not spending three to four months shooting a movie with a woman you’re not comfortable with me being around.”
“Do you have feelings for Quinn Wilder?”
“She’s a nice person, but I have no desire to be with her in a romantic way.”
I believe him, damnit. Time to be a better woman. “Will you promise me one thing?”
He doesn’t hesitate to respond, “I’ll promise you the world.”
My eyes itch. Stupid hay fever. Never mind I’ve never had hay fever or allergies of any kind before in my life.
“Stop being sweet.”
“Sorry, June Bug. If there’s one thing I can’t promise you, it’s to stop being sweet to you.”
I narrow my eyes on him. “You’re not helping matters.”
He widens his eyes and feigns innocence. Whatever.
“Will you promise me if things change?” I have to pause to swallow the huge potato that suddenly lodged itself in my throat. “If you develop romantic feelings for Quinn, you’ll tell me before you act on them?”
He growls. “Never gonna happen.”
“This is not you promising me.”
His hold on my hands tightens. “I, Maverick Langston, promise you, Juniper Berry West, aka June Bug, if I lose my ever-loving mind and develop romantic feelings for Quinn, I will not act on those feelings and I will let you know.”
I allow his words to fill my heart before I inhale a deep breath and blow it out. “Okay, Maverick Langston. I want you to accept the part.”
He holds my gaze for several seconds before nodding. “You realize this means I need to fly out to LA this week to meet with my agent and sign the contract?”
“I understand.”
His eyes light up. “I have an idea. Why don’t you come with me?”
“I can’t. I don’t have anyone to mind the animals.”
“What about Harmony?”
I shake my head. “I don’t want her handling the refuge for more than two days at a time, and I assume you need more than two days.”
He frowns. “I do. I’ll be gone for at least a week. As long as I’m flying out, I might as well get a few things handled with the sale of my house.”
I cringe when he mentions selling his house. “You don’t have to sell your house in Hollywood for me.” I don’t want to be the bitch who forces him to sell his house.
“There’s no sense keeping it when my home base is now Winter Falls.”
“You’re sure?”
“I am. As long as you’re sure you can handle me acting in a film with Quinn.”
“I’m sure.”
I hope I sound more confident than I feel because my confidence is wavering. I do believe Mav loves me and doesn’t intend to hurt me. I also believe things happen when you’re away from home for an extended period of time. Being in love with a movie star is not all it’s cracked up to be.
