Chapter 8
You can tell when a rabbit’s in a good mood because he’s hoppy.
Iglare at Ashlyn. “What are you talking about?”
“Legend has it Eostre mated—”
“I know the legend of the Eostre pagan festival,” I growl. “What I don’t know is why you’re offering me an outfit for Eostre.”
She beams down at me. “Because you’re representing Eostre.”
“We’ve never had anyone represent Eostre at the festival before,” I point out.
“We can hardly have an Equinox without an Eostre.”
I groan. I should have known. Eostre is the fertility goddess of humans and crops.According to legend, Eostre mated with the solar god of the spring, Equinox, and nine months later gave birth to a god child. The legend is the basis for our annual Eostre festival. But this festival has never included anyone playing the goddess and god before.
“It won’t work, you know.”
She widens her eyes in an effort to appear innocent. Innocent my ass. She’s obviously concocted some plan to put me and Maverick together and I do not approve. Not one tiny bit.
“You’re my baby sister. You’re supposed to be on my side.”
She flinches before quickly covering it up. “I’m on the side of love.”
My sister being married to the man she’s been in love with forever is a pain in my ass. I could remind her of all the times she didn’t want to talk about Rowan when he was ignoring her, but I’m not a bitch. I am happy she’s happy. What I’m not happy about is her thinking I need to be all loved up now, too.
“Don’t tell me you’ve joined Aspen’s matchmaking committee.”
“There’s no committee.” Her eyes widen when she realizes what she said, and she slams a hand over her mouth.
“What did I do when you thought Rowan didn’t want you?” Maybe I am a bit of bitch after all.
She shakes her head with her hands over her mouth.
“I’ll tell you. I sat by you while you drank Long Island iced teas. I brought you movies and chocolates. I listened to you whine about the man. What didn’t I do?”
When she refuses to answer, I do on her behalf. “I didn’t push you into his arms.”
“But—”
“And Rowan didn’t do you wrong. He didn’t sneak out of your bed and kiss another woman for the entire world to see.”
“Maybe he accidentally kissed her?”
I raise a brow. “The same way you accidentally have a key to Ellery’s garage she doesn’t know about?”
She throws the pagan goddess outfit at me. “Just put it on or I’ll sic the rest of our sisters on you. And you can deal with Cole for making Ellery walk all the way over here.”
Another sister invasion? No, thanks. I snatch the outfit and stomp to my bedroom to get changed.
The first thing on my to-do list for Monday morning is phoning the locksmith to get my locks changed. I should probably get a security system, too. Never mind I’d literally be the only person in Winter Falls to have a security system let alone use her locks. I am done with my baby sister invading my house.
When I stroll into my living room a few minutes later, Ashlyn claps. “I knew this outfit would be perfect for you.”
Apparently, her idea of perfect is my boobs threatening to fall out of the top of this dress. I raise a hand but quickly drop it again when I realize I’m about to flash her.
“Stop. I don’t want to know anymore about your conniving. You got me into the outfit. Let’s go.”
